Vering's Pin Sparks Husker Win

Vering's Pin Sparks Husker Win
Lincoln --The eighth-ranked Huskers opened the 1999-2000 season with a hard-fought 20-16 win over Lock Haven Friday evening at the Devaney Center.

The Huskers, trailed 10-0 before winning five of last seven matches to pick up their first win of the year. All-American Brad Vering sealed the comeback with a pin of Lock Havens Mike Greenberg at 197 pounds to give NU the victory.

Nebraska fell behind early when Lock Haven earned a major decision at 125 pounds, then got decisions at 133 and 141 pounds to take a 10-0 lead.

Sophomore Joe Henson started the Husker comeback at 149 pounds. Matched-up against Dave Shafer of Lock Haven, Henson earned a 10-5 decision to put three points on the board for NU.

Returning All-American and third-ranked Bryan Snyder boosted Nebraska at 157 pounds. Snyder, a sophomore, earned a technical fall at 5:57 over Brian Olenek, closing the gap to 10-8.

In what may have been the biggest match of the night, sophomore Tony Denke defeated Ben Stehura 5-3 at 165 to give the Huskers an 11-10 lead, theyre first lead of the night.

Junior Ati Conner impressed many with a 10-4 decision over Joshua Millard at 174 pounds to give the Huskers a 14-10 lead heading into the 184-pound match. At 184, #18 Dave Murray won a close 6-5 match with junior Charles McTorry to move Lock Haven to within one, 14-13, heading into Verings match.

The fourth-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds, Vering, who finished fourth at last seasons NCAAs, pinned Greenberg 1:34 into the match to give the Huskers a insurmountable lead at 20-13. True freshman Pat Miron fell in his first collegiate match to Ken Haines in a 2-1 decision at heavyweight. The win was not enough to propel Lock Haven as the Huskers would go on to win 20-16

Nebraska Head Coach Tim Neumann was weary of the early season dual with the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven.

The dual had a match-up of a January dual, and we are wrestling it in November, Neumann said. We train them to wrestle in November, and they have to wrestle at the intensity of a January dual. Thats why normally you have open tournaments to begin the year, but this was a great experience though for the whole team.

NU returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 20, in an open tournament at the Black & Decker Cornell Classic in Ithaca, N.Y. Competition begins at 10 a.m.
