Lincoln--The No. 66 Nebraska women's tennis team kept its hopes alive today for an NCAA regional bid with a 8-1 win over Iowa State at the Woods Tennis Center. The only point NU dropped was at No. 3 doubles. Head Coach Scott Jacobson decided to rest sophomore Ndali Ijomah and her ailing knee for this weekend.
In singles, junior Sandra Noetzel won her 13th consecutive match at No. 1 singles, breezing by Noortje Cornelissen, 6-0, 6-1. With the victory, Noetzel moved into a tie for the all-time singles win leader at 75 with former Husker Iidiko Guba. At No. 2, freshman Katarina Balan beat Edna Vazquez, 6-0, 6-3. Ijomah continued the dominance at No. 3, defeating Ann Simons 7-5, 6-1. At No. 4, junior Gina Pelazini beat Kendra Leese, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Danica Hardy defeated Mary Rumbaoa at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 6, freshman Amy Frisch beat Sharla Whitaker, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Noetzel and Pelazini teamed up to beat Cornelissen and Karin Westberg at No. 1, 8-3. At No. 2, Balan and Hardy defeated Leese and Vazquez, 8-3.
Jacobson feels that this match was a must win for his 16-6 Huskers if they were to earn an NCAA regional bid.
"We are in position now, heading into this weekend, to get an NCAA regional bid," Jacobson said. "Both Baylor and Colorado will be tough matches for us."
NU will return to action on Saturday when they take on Baylor at 10 a.m. The match is scheduled to be played at the Cather-Pound Tennis Courts if weather permits.
