Wichita, Kan.--Husker senior Jamie Rogers led the Nebraska men's golf team Monday by firing scores of 69 and 71 during the first round of NU's final regular-season tournament -- the Diet Pepsi/Shocker Classic., which features a field of 20 squads. Rogers is tied for fifth with a four-under-par 140, just seven strokes off the leading pace at the par 72, 6,913-yard Crestview Country Club.
Joining Rogers as a Husker representative in the top 25 was senior Scott Gutschewski, who carded rounds of 72 and 71 to finish the day at one-under-par 143 in a tie for 16th.
As a team, the 11th-ranked Huskers are in sole possession of fourth after the first two of three rounds at the Shocker Classic. NU, participating in its first tournament since March 23, carded rounds of 285 and 287 to total a 572. Nebraska trails unranked leader North Texas (288-272--560) and Big 12 foes Iowa State (283-282--565) and Colorado (287-280--567).
Senior Steve Friesen is tied for 36th at two-over-par after shooting two rounds of 73. Seniors Josh Madden and Ryan Nietfeldt struggled Monday, as Madden is tied for 54th (71-78--149) and Nietfeldt is tied for 87th (82-72--154).
Neal Collins of North Texas is atop the individual leaderboard with an impressive 11-under-par, 133-stroke performance after firing rounds of 68 and 65. Colorado's Matthew Zions is in second (68-67--135).
The Huskers will try to avoid finishing out of the top three for the first time since Sept. 22, 1998, when they take the course for the final 18 holes Tuesday at 8 a.m.
