Friesen Wins Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational

Husker senior Steve Friesen fired a 71 in Sundays final round at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational to finish first in the field of 120 golfers with a seven-under-par 209 (71-67-71--209). The Lincoln native edged California's Han Lee by two strokes (209-211) to win the first fall tournament for Nebraska.

Friesen was tied for ninth after shooting a one-under-par 71 on Friday, before moving into a tie for the lead Saturday with a 67. The win marks the third time Friesen, who won the Nebraska State Match Play and State Medal Play Tournaments this summer, has won a collegiate tournament in his career. He won the Kansas Invitational and Woodlands Intercollegiate in the fall of 1996. It is also the second consecutive year a Husker has won the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational. Last season, Jamie Rogers carded a 210 to win the event.

As a team, Nebraska finished third with a five-under-par 859 (291-285-283). California, who led the tournament from the beginning nine holes, went on to claim victory with a 12-under-par 852. Illinois was second with an 858, just one stroke in front of the Huskers.

Josh Madden also finished in the top five for NU. Madden carded a 67 Sunday -- just one stroke off his career best mark -- to finish in a tie for fifth at two-under-par 214 (73-74-67). Scott Gutschewski also placed in the Top 25, finishing in a tie for 22nd with a 218 (71-75-72). Jamie Rogers finished 31st with a 220 (76-69-75), and Ryan Nietfeldt tied for 88th with a 230 (77-80-73).

Nebraska's next competition is the Kansas Invitational, Sept. 21-22, in Lawrence.
