Jacksonville, Ala. -- The Nebraska rifle team, behind a school-record smallbore score, defeated Jacksonville State on Saturday in a shoulder-to-shoulder match in Jacksonville, Ala. On the strength of the smallbore score, Nebraska also established a new school record for total points with 6,178 to better JSU's total of 6,126. In three matches this season, the Huskers have rewritten the record books, establishing school records in the air rifle, smallbore and overall match total.
Nebraska's smallbore score of 4,631 crushed their previous best by 23 points, while their aggregate score of 6,178 bettered their previous high by 13. The previous records were both set on Feb. 13, 2000 in a match against Ohio State. Jacksonville fired a 4,594.
Individually, Nebraska placed four shooters in the top five, led by sophomore Nicole Allaire, who fired a 1,165 to finish second in the smallbore behind JSU's Kevin Simon (1,170). Sophomore Amanda Trujillo fired a 1,159 to finish third, while freshman Heather Pissos shot a 1,158 to claim fourth. Freshman Melissa Downsbrough's sixth-place score of 1,149 rounded out the team scoring.
Nebraska also won the air rifle team title with 1,547 points, led by Trujillo who fired a personal-best score of 392 to top all shooters. Allaire shot a 389 to finish third, while Downsbrough and junior Terim Richards both fired scores of 383 to tie for fifth. Jacksonville totaled 1,532 points.
Junior Rachel Spiry, competing as an individual, shot a personal-best score of 386 in the air rifle and fired a 1,143 in the smallbore.
On Sunday Nebraska will travel with Jacksonville State to Cookeville, Tenn., to take on Tennessee Tech in a triangular.
