Marc Harwood Season 2003-04

NCAA Championships

2006-Harwood went 0-2 in his first career trip to the NCAA Championships.  In the first round, Harwood was defeated by major decision at 165 pounds by <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>West Virginia's Larry Hall, 11-3.  Hall took control of the dual by outscoring Harwood 6-2 in the second period.  Harwood saw his season after a 10-1 major decision loss to Missouri's Matt Pell.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Big 12 Championships

2007-Competing at 174 pounds, Harwood placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships for a second consecutive season and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive season.

 

Entering the tournament as a No. 4 seed, Harwood lost his first-round match to Grant Turner of Iowa State, 3-2, but won the consolation match with a 4-0 decision over Josh Weitzel of Oklahoma. Harwood lost to Turner again in the 3rd-place match, 5-3.

 

2006-Harwood finished fourth at 2006 Big 12 Championships with a 1-2 record.  Harwood was awarded a wild-card bid to nationals, as he faced a tough weight class in which all five wrestlers were ranked.

 

The No. 4 seed, Harwood won his opening round match with Oklahoma’s Jerrod King, 11-4, before falling to top-ranked Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State and second-ranked Trent Paulson of IowaState. 

 

2005-Harwood was 0-2 in his two matches in his first career appearance at the Big 12 Championships.  However, both of his losses were hotly contested matches, including his overtime loss to 15th-ranked Nick Passalano of IowaState, 2-1.  Harwood was eliminated from the tournament with a 2-1 loss to eighth-ranked E.K. Waldhaus of Oklahoma.

 

Career Notes

2007-Harwood entered the season as the Huskers' starter at 165 pounds, but injuries to teammates forced him to split time between 165 and 174 for most of the season. Harwood still managed success as he ended the season with a 13-13 record, including 9-9 in duals. Harwood recorded 16 takedown's on the year as well as four pins. He earned one technical fall and one medical decision.

 

2006-Harwood started for the Huskers at 165 pounds for most of the season and finished with a 9-6 dual mark. 

 

In the first dual match of the year, Harwood blasted BoiseState’s Lex Case in a 13-4 major decision win.  Harwood won six of his first seven matches, including a sixth-place finish at the Kauffman-Brand Open and a pin of Wyoming’s Gary Dack on Nov. 26.  After a loss to third-ranked Ryan Churella of Michigan, Harwood rebounded to beat fourth-ranked Matt Nagel of Minnesota, 3-2, on Dec. 11, starting a five-match winning streak.

 

Harwood won back-to-back matches by major decision before heading to the National Duals and wrestling to a 2-2 record.  Harwood ended the season losing to three ranked wrestlers in conference duals. 

 

2005-Harwood spent most of the season as Nebraska’s starter at 174 pounds.  He finished the 2004-05 season 19-12 overall, and 9-9 in duals. 

Harwood started his first season of varsity wrestling on a tear.  After losing his first match of the Harold Nichols Open to start the campaign, Harwood won 14 of his next 15 matches. 

 

In his dual debut against West Virginia on Nov. 26, Harwood capped a three-match win streak by Nebraska against West Virginia with his 5-3 overtime victory over Ryan Wilman.  The win clinched the dual victory for Nebraska. 

 

Harwood followed up that clutch performance with a third-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.  Included among Harwood’s six wins were three bonus-point victories and a win over ninth-ranked Nick Roy of Michigan.  Harwood was ranked 10th among the nation’s 174-pound wrestlers after that weekend.  Harwood went on to spend a month in the top 10 in the national rankings.

 

In conference duals, Harwood faced a deep field of 174-pound wrestlers.  All five were ranked at some point during the season, including eventual national champion Chris Pendleton of OklahomaState and Missouri’s Ben Askren, who was a national runner-up in the weight class.  Against Pendleton, Harwood scored a three-point near fall to draw the match to 10-7 halfway through the second period, but Pendleton pulled away to register the victory in the match, 16-7, in Oklahoma State’s dual victory at Nebraska Feb. 10.           

 

2004-Harwood missed the entire 2004 season while recovering from an elbow injury.

 

2003-Harwood was one of three redshirts to share Nebraska’s Redshirt-of-the-Year award, compiling a 21-2 record with six pins, two technical falls and two major decisions. He took three first-place showings at the Nebraska-Kearney, Dana and UNO Glen Brand opens. He also added a third-place finish at the Worthington Open.

 

Before Nebraska-A four-time all-state wrestler, Harwood was a two-time state champion helping lead his team to back-to-back team titles. He earned academic all-state honors his senior year and was a three-year member of the Minnesota Storm Junior National Freestyle Wrestling Team.  Harwood had a career record of 192-25 including 42-0 records in his junior and senior seasons. Harwood lettered five times in wrestling and two times in football, earning defensive MVP honors while leading his team to a state championship.

 

Personal-The son of David and Susan Harwood, Marc was born Nov. 12, 1983.  He has two brothers, Derek and Jace. He majored in art at Nebraska.
