Olympic bronze-medalist and two-time national champion at Iowa, Terry Brands spent one season (2000-01) as an assistant coach under Mark Manning at Nebraska. Brands helped coach the Huskers to an 11-6 dual record during the season, finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships with four Nebraska wrestlers earning All-America honors.
Brands spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for Jim Zalesky at Iowa. Brands, along with his brother Tom, helped lead the Hawkeyes to six consecutive NCAA team titles.
During his collegiate wrestling days, Brands earned All-America honors three times, was a three-time Big Ten champion and a two-time national champion at 126 pounds (1990-92). He finished his Iowa career with an impressive mark of 137-7-0 (.951). Brands finished his senior season in 1992 with an undefeated 35-0 record.
After his Hawkeye days, Brands won the World Freestyle Championships in 1993 and 1995, and World Cup titles in 1994 and 1995. Brands also won the bronze medal in the 58 kg/127.75-pound Olympic freestyle wrestling competition in 2000.
A native of Sheldon, Iowa, Brands received his bachelor's degree in Human Development from the University of Iowa in 1992. He and his wife, Michelle, have a son, Nelson, and a daughter, Sydney.
