Pohlman wrestled at 141 pounds for the first three open tournaments of the season and managed a 2-6 record before making the switch to 133 pounds. The switch paid immediate dividends for Pohlman, as he took fifth at the UNK Loper Open in his first tournament at the new weight. He added a fifth-place finish at the Quality Hotel Open later in the season. Pohlman ended the season with a 13-14 record, while ranking fourth on the team with five major decisions.

Before Nebraska
Ryan Pohlman was a two-time Nebraska Class C state champion and four-time state finalist at Raymond Central High School. A first-team all-state selection, Pohlman compiled a dominant 161-7 career record and captured the gold medal as a sophomore (2008) and senior (2010), while taking runner-up honors in 2007 and 2009. He is the only two-time state champion in school history.

A four-year letterwinner on the wrestling mat, Pohlman also lettered three times in football.

Ryan is the son of Scott and Shery Pohlman and was born in Lincoln, Neb., on Aug. 6, 1982. He has a younger sister, Kayla. Ryan is majoring in forensic science.
