Three-time All-American Kim DeHaan was a letterwinner for the Huskers from 1994-97. DeHaan earned scholastic and athletic All-America honors in the same season, becoming just the second NU gymnast to do so. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
As a senior: Even though Kim DeHaan struggled with injuries during much of her senior season, she still proved to leave a lasting mark on Nebraska women's gymnastics with second-team All-America honors on both floor and bars in 1997. DeHaan became only the second NU women’s gymnast to capture both academic and athletic All-America awards in the same season. She earned second-team accolades on the uneven bars in 1996 as well as being named an academic All-American.
At the 1997 Big 12 Championships, DeHaan placed third on bars (9.875) and fourth on floor (9.875). At the Midwest Regional, she took fifth on floor, posting a score of 9.825. DeHaan hit career-high scores of 9.925 on bars two times in 1997, against Southeast Missouri State and Iowa State. She also added a 9.95 on floor against Iowa State, which gave her a new career-high and broke the school record mark.
A biological sciences major, DeHaan maintained a 4.0 grade point average during her career and was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1996. A four-time first-team academic all-conference honoree, she was named to the NAGCC All-Scholastic team in 1997.
A two-time Big Eight Champion and four-time All-Conference honoree, DeHaan was the Big Eight Newcomer of the Year in 1994. A school record holder on the floor exercise (9.95), she earned all-conference recognition all four seasons.
As a junior: A 1996 First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-American, DeHaan became the second gymnast in NU women’s history to also earn athletic All-American honors in the same season as she received second-team All-American honors on the uneven bars at the NCAA Championship. She was plagued by a knee injury throughout the season, but was a consistent performer on the uneven bars and floor. DeHaan returned to the all-around lineup at the Midwest Regional where she posted a season-high 38.775 score. She tied her career best on bars (9.925) at the Midwest Regional and recorded a 9.85 on floor at the Big Eight Championships to tie for first place while also tying for first on bars with a score of 9.90. She set a career best on the vault (9.825) against Penn State. At the NCAA Championships, she tied for 11th place on bars (9.85) and for 27th on floor (9.775).
As a sophomore: In just her second season with the Husker program, DeHaan established herself as one of the greats in Nebraska women’s gymnastics history. She competed in the all-around nine times, placing first at Iowa State and against Oklahoma. DeHaan won seven individual titles and was one of the strongest vaulters on the team, averaging a score of 9.69. She received two Big Eight awards for bars and floor. She broke the school record on floor with a score of 9.95 and received a perfect 10.0 from one judge en route to her All-Big Eight performance. At the Midwest Regional, she scored a 9.825 on bars and finished 19th in the all-around with a 38.575. DeHaan earned Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight honors for the second-straight year.
As a freshman: DeHaan jumpstarted her Husker career in strong and dominant fashion, being named the Big Eight Gymnast-of-the-Month for February and the 1994 Big Eight Newcomer of the Year. Along with fellow freshman Shelly Bartlett, DeHaan was one of only three Huskers to compete in the all-around at every meet of the season. A multi-faceted gymnast, she won numerous all-around titles during her first year. She set season bests with a 9.80 on vault, a 9.85 on bars, a 9.65 on beam, a 9.725 on floor and a 38.925 in the all-around. She capped a stellar season at the Big Eight Conference Championships with a second-place finish on bars and a 10th-place finish in the all-around. DeHaan also earned Academic All-Big Eight honors in 1994.
Prior: Before coming to Nebraska, DeHaan was coached by Gene Luke at the All-American Gymnastics Academy. She posted personal-best score of 9.70 on vault, 9.85 on bars and 38.10 in the all-around. She was the South Dakota state and regional champion in the all-around, as well as the national bars champion.
Personal: Kim DeHaan was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., on May 3, 1975 to John and Linda DeHaan. She enjoys spending time with friends, dancing and shopping and is a self-proclaimed animal lover. She has one brother, Chris.
