Four-time All-American Julie Houk earned four letters at <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska from 2000 to 2003. A three-time All-Big 12 honoree, Houk was the Big 12 bars champion in 2000 and 2003, and was named to the Big 12 Conference 10th Anniversary Gymnastics Team in 2006.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

2003 ? Senior Season

Houk nabbed her fourth All-America nod on bars with a first-team award and a 10th-place finish (9.725) in the individual event finals at the NCAA Championships. The Hamilton, Ohio, native claimed her second Big 12 bars title with teammate Tami Harris. Houk also won two additional bars titles over her senior season against Missouri and IowaState.

 

Houk’s finest showing of the year came at the Big 12 Championships, where she won the bars championship (9.95) and tied her career best on floor with a 9.90 to tie for sixth.

 

2002 ? Junior Season

Houk was a force on bars for the Huskers, capturing first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships en route to a 10th-place individual finish on the event. Houk finished the regular season ranked 14th nationally on the event and captured a total of six bars titles. At the Masters Classic, she won the individual bars crown while tying the BobDevaneySportsCenter record with a 9.95 on the event.

 

In addition to previously competing on bars and floor, Houk also contributed on vault for NU. She made her competitive debut against Missouri with a 9.55 and also earned a spot in the lineup against Alabama with a season-high 9.675.

 

2001 ? Sophomore Season

Houk finished her second year as Nebraska’s highest ranked gymnast on any event with her fifth-place national ranking on bars. The Nebraska’s 14 meets over the course of the season, Houk scored at least a 9.90 eight times, including a streak of six straight meets.

 

At the NCAA Championships, Houk earned the second All-America award of her career after posting a 9.85 in the preliminary session to finish fifth overall. Houk added a solid 9.825 at the NCAA Super Six Finals to help the Huskers to a fifth-place finish.

 

At the Big 12 Championships, Houk recorded a 9.95 to finish second only to fellow Husker Bree Dority O’Callaghan’s perfect 10.0 score.

 

2000 ? Freshman Season

The 2000 Big 12 bars champion, Houk emerged as one of the nation’s top bars performers in her first season at Nebraska. She earned a second-team All-America award on bars with a 9.80 at the preliminary session of the NCAA Championships and followed up with a 9.925 at the NCAA Super Six Finals.

 

Houk ranked third in the country on bars during the regular season and was one of only two freshmen, along with West Virginia vaulter TeShawne Jackson, who were included in the top five nationally on any event. Houk led the Big 12 Conference and Region 3 on bars and achieved a streak of five straight bars titles won, which was snapped only at the NCAA Region 3 Championships with a second-place 9.95 finish to teammate Heather Brink.

 

Before Nebraska

Houk competed for Coach Mary Lee Tracy and Mike Lorenzen at CincinnatiGymnasticsAcademy with fellow Husker Jess Wertz. The 1999 Junior Olympic national bars champion, Houk qualified for JO Nationals on three occasions. She placed first on bars at the Aloha Gymfest, the Coca-Cola Classic and the Level 10 Ohio State Championships in 1997.

 

Personal

The daughter of John and Nancy Houk, Julie was born on Sept. 3, 1981, in Hamilton, Ohio. She has three older brothers: Chris, Brad and Mark. A 1999 graduate of HamiltonBadinHigh School, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Management from Nebraska in 2004.
