Following All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region honors during the 2008 cross country season, Rachel Carrizales (pronounced Car-ri-SAL-es) opened the 2009 indoor season by breaking her previous best of 5:05.96 in the mile with a runner-up time of 4:58.98 at the Holiday Inn Invitational... dropped the time again at the Nebraska Tune-Up, running 4:56.05... ran personal-best times in the 3,000 meters (9:43.47) and 5,000 meters (16:59.64) at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, to finish 10th and ninth, respectively... started the outdoor season by shattering her previous best of 10:17.26 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:09.66 at the Stanford Invitational... took third at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase, her top finish at the meet and third straight All-Big 12 honor... earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but was unable to finish the race due to illness.
2008 (Sophomore/Junior)
Carrizales scored at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships and reached the NCAA Midwest Regional for the second straight year... competed in six indoor meets in 2008, after redshirting in 2007... posted a then-personal-best mile time at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational (5:05.96)... started the outdoor season with a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Jim Click Shootout (10:48.62)... knocked nearly 20 seconds off her time two weeks later at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays to finish 14th with a time of 10:28.97... finished eighth at the Big 12 Championships (11:17.51) and ninth at the NCAA Midwest Regional with a season-best time of 10:24.91... ran the anchor leg of the 4x1,600-meter relay at the Drake Relays that set the second-fastest time in school history at 19:50.11.
2007 (Sophomore)
Carrizales made her first appearance at the NCAA Championships during the outdoor season after experiencing a breakout sophomore season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase... notched a then-personal-best time of 10:17.26 at the outdoor championships... posted career-best times in the event each time out in 2007, while lowering her mark nearly 30 seconds by the end of the season... earned a spot on Nebraska’s NCAA roster with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional in a then-personal-best 10:25.22, which was 11 seconds faster than her previous best, moving her past former two-time NCAA mile champion Anne Shadle into second place on the school’s all-time event chart... placed a surprising fourth at the Big 12 outdoor meet after entering the meet as the conference’s ninth seed... claimed her first regional qualification while finishing 11th at the Drake Relays (10:49.81)... redshirted during the indoor season with anemia... competed unattached in her only indoor meet at the Prairie Wolf Invitational, running then-personal bests in the mile (5:17.27) and 3,000 meters (10:29.34).
2006 (Freshman)
Carrizales focused on the mile and 3,000 meters during the indoor season, improving her time through each of the first four weeks... ran times of 10:50.31 in the 3,000 and 5:19.98 in the mile at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational and adidas Classic, respectively... ran the 5,000 meters twice during the outdoor season, running 20:02.3 at the Nebraska Invite.
Before Nebraska (Morrill HS)
Carrizales joined NU’s distance corps following an outstanding prep career at Morrill High School under coaches Scott Axt, Scott Stoltenburg and Torrey Bugher... collected 11 medals at the Nebraska Class C state meet... earned gold in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs as a senior in 2005, while anchoring the Lions’ fourth-place 4x800-meter relay... claimed wins in the 800 and 1,600 as a sophomore in 2003, while finishing runner-up in both events as a junior... helped boost Morrill to the 2003 team title... won the 2004 Class D individual cross country title after finishing second in 2002 and 2003... placed 10th at the state cross country meet as a freshman... member of the National Honor Society... chose Nebraska over Kansas State.
