Eric Petersen earned his first Big 12 medals in 2009, including a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw during the outdoor season... opened the indoor season with three straight top-10 finishes at the Holiday Inn Invitational (8th), Conference Challenge (6th) and adidas Classic (9th) in the weight throw... broke his previous best of 56-6 3/4 at the Tyson Invitational with a fourth-place toss of 58-8... placed sixth at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with a throw of 57-6 1/2... started the outdoor season by nearly matching his hammer throw personal best of 184-10 with a fourth-place throw of 184-4 at the Stanford Invitational... broke his previous best the following week at the Jim Click Shootout with a toss of 186-0... surpassed the regional qualifying standard of 186-4 at the Drake Relays with a throw of 186-11... exploded with a toss of 193-4 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships to take fourth place... finished ninth at his first regional meet with a toss of 190-4.
2008 (Sophomore)
Petersen saw significant improvement during his sophomore season, as he set personal bests in the weight throw indoors and the hammer throw outdoors... broke his personal best in the weight throw at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with a toss of 56-5 3/4, breaking his previous best by nearly four feet... matched his personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-6 at the Ward Haylett Invitational to finish sixth... broke his previous best by more than six feet the following week at the Nebraska Invitational with a throw of 184-10... made his second straight trip to the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, finishing 10th with a toss of 177-4.
2007 (Freshman)
Petersen concentrated on the weight and hammer throws... whirled a then-personal best of 52-6 1/2 in the weight throw at the NWU Invitational... finished seventh (50-9 1/4) at the adidas Classic... during the outdoor season, made his first Big 12 Championships run with a 10th-place finish in the hammer (178-2).
Before Nebraska (Stevens HS)
Petersen placed fifth in the discus as a senior at the 2005 South Dakota Class AA state meet with a throw of 151-10... coached by Paul Hendry and Kerry Beyer... was a member of the National Honor Society.
