2008 (Senior)

Peter van der Westhuizen (pronounced VAUGHN der VEST-HI-zen) capped off a brilliant Husker career with his first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships and his third trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships... started the indoor season on a tear, finishing first in three different events over the course of three meets, setting personal bests at each... opened the season with a victory in the 5,000 meters (14:20.65) at the Conference Challenge... torched the field in dramatic fashion in the 3,000 meters (8:07.50) the following week at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational... recorded a personal-best time of 4:02.19 in the mile run at the adidas Classic in Lincoln on Feb. 9... finished second in the mile at the Big 12 Indoor Championships (4:02.56)... recorded a sub-four-minute mile on an oversized track at the UW Last Chance Qualifier in Seattle, Wash., with a time of 3:59.05... finished 11^th in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 4:06.17... started the outdoor season with a win in the 3,000 meters at the Jim Click Shootout with a personal-best time of 8:39.19... focused on the 800 and 1,500 meters the rest of the season... posted top five finishes in the 800 at every meet competed... finished first at the Nebraska Invitational (1:52.97)... finished third in the 1,500 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays (3:44.67)... recorded the top prelim time in the 1,500 meters at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships... finished third in the finals (3:47.58)... earned top finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 1,500 meters with a 17^th-place finish after finishing 20^th in 2005 and 21^st in  2007... leaves Nebraska ranked in the top 10 in five different indoor events, including the top three in three events... ranked in the top 20 in three outdoor events.

2007 (Junior)

van der Westhuizen qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with the fifth-fastest 1,500-meter time in school history (3:41.17) at the NCAA Midwest Regional...  during the indoor season, van der Westhuizen ran an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 4:01.79 in the mile... was runner-up in the 1,000-meter run at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with a 2:22.41 (oversize)... struggled all year from the affects of posterior compartment syndrome, which was surgically relieved following the outdoor season... won the mile in the adidas Classic with a personal-best of 4:02.27... ran 1:49.98 in teh 800-meters at the Prairie Wolf Invitational, which broke his personal best indoors... on the oversize 300-meter oval at the Iowa State Classic, he ran his fastest time in the mile (4:01.79)... won the Holiday Inn Invitational 5,000-meter title in his first attemp at the distance in 14:25.81.

 

2006 (Sophomore)

van der Westhuizen experienced his second straight all-conference indoor season before redshirting outdoors... placed fifth in the 1,000 meters at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with a personal-best time (2:23.52)... broke his career-best mile time and reached the NCAA provisional-qualifying mark at the Tyson Invitational... won his first four races of the indoor season... ran personal-best times to win the 3,000 meters at the Holiday Inn Invite, the 800 meters at the Nebraska-Colorado State-Kent State Triangular and the 1,000 to win the adidas Classic... also claimed gold in the mile at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite (4:04.34)... won the 1,500 while running unattached in two meets outdoors, the Nebraska Invite (3:50.26) and the Concordia Twilight (3:47.69)... the Concordia time set a stadium record.

 

2005 (Freshman) 

van der Westhuizen earned runner-up honors in the mile at the Big 12 indoor meet with his previous personal-best time of 4:03.56... claimed bronze in the 1,500 meters at the Big 12 outdoor meet with a clocking of 3:46.32... qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place finish in 3:45.75 at the NCAA Midwest Regional... did not advance out of a slow, tactical preliminary round at the NCAA outdoor meet (3:51.29)... opened the outdoor season with a career-low time for a fourth-place finish at the Stanford Invite... collected silver honors at the Drake Relays (3:47.77)... earned wins in the 1,500 at the Emporia State Relays (1:53.36) and the 800 meters at the Long Beach Invite (1:50.29)... registered a personal-best clocking to finish second in the 800 at the Nebraska Invite... won the mile indoors at the adidas Classic (4:12.98), while finishing second at the Husker Invite (4:04.85) to earn his first NCAA provisional qualification... finished third in the mile at the Iowa State Classic in a then-career-low clocking of 4:04.02... ran the 1,600-meter leg of NU’s NCAA provisional-qualifying distance medley relay that finished ninth at the Alex Wilson Invite in 9:36.76 (oversized), the second-fastest time in school history.

van der Westhuizen finished runner-up in the 1,500-meter run at the 2003 South African Junior (Under-20) Championships... finished third in the same event in 2002.
