  • Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2012)

2014-15 (Outlook)
Melisa Mexia enters her junior season determined to build on the success of her first two seasons at Nebraska. Mexia set four career bests and produced five top-five showings as a sophomore. A combination of experience and talent should provide a good foundation for Mexia to build on in her third season swimming for the Huskers.

2013-14 (Sophomore)
Mexia had a strong sophomore season for the Huskers. The Los Mochis, Mexico, native set career bests in four of her five events. Swimming times of 1:55.93 in the 200-yard freestyle and 56.76 in the 100-yard butterfly, Mexia set two career bests at the Big Ten Championships. She also compiled five top-five finishes, with two of those being second-place performances.

2012-13 (Freshman)
Mexia made an immediate impact in 2012-13, competing in seven events and finishing in the top 10 five times for the Huskers. She notched a pair of top-five finishes against San Diego State, taking third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.35) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (58.52). Mexia also set personal-best times in the 100 fly (57.02), 200 fly (2:01.85) and 200 IM (2:11.19) at the Big Ten Championships in February. Mexia found success in the classroom as well, earning a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall semester of 2012.

Previous
Mexia attended HYCIG in Mexico and graduated in 2012. Excelling in the butterfly, she finished second in the 100-meter butterfly in the 2010 North American Challenge Cup in Santa Clara, Calif. She also finished second in the 50-meter butterfly at the 2012 National Olympiad in Monterrey, Mexico.

Personal
Melisa is the daughter of Juan Gerardo Mexia and Maria Yuriko Okamura and has two brothers, Juan Gerardo and Pablo Miguel. She was born in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, on Jan. 22, 1994. Melisa is majoring in psychology at Nebraska and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall semester of 2012.
