2010-11 (Senior)
Meredith Matthies (pronounced MATH-eez) finished her Nebraska career in stellar fashion, capturing 20 top-five finishes in her final season. Matthies set a personal-best time (54.44) with a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly against Iowa State. She competed in eight events as a senior, and set two season-best times at the 2011 Big 12 Championships. The Wichita, Kan., native was also a standout in the classroom and the community, earning first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the third straight season. Matthies also claimed one of Nebraska's prestigious HERO Student-Athlete Leadership awards for her commitment to the Husker Life Skills program, along with a spot on each of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Rolls in Fall 2010 and Spring 2011..
2009-10 (Junior)
Matthies continued to be a strong contributor in both the freestyle and butterfly events as a junior. She finished the season with 12 top-five finishes including two wins, which both came in the 200-yard butterfly. Matthies recorded three top-five team times on the NU season list in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, along with the 200-yard individual medley. She set personal bests in each of the 100- and 200-yard butterfly at the Big 12 Championships. Outside the pool, Matthies earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the second straight season.
2008-09 (Sophomore)
Matthies excelled as a sophomore, especially the sprint freestyle and butterfly events, while also contributing in the backstroke. Her best meet of the season came against South Dakota State, when she won both in the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle to help the Huskers secure their first dual win of the year. Matthies produced seven top-five finishes on the season and set three career-best times at the 2009 Big 12 Championships. She also finished 24th in the 200 fly at the Big 12 meet. Matthies also claimed first-team academic All-Big 12 accolades for her performance in the classroom.
2007-08 (Freshman)
Matthies was asked to fill a variety of roles for the Huskers as a freshman. She showed her versatility by swimming in the butterfly and backstroke as well as the freestyle. Matthies stepped into a major role in the backstroke when Kelsey Ida went down with an injury. Matthies capped the year with a 22nd-place finish at the 2008 Big 12 Championships in the 100-yard backstroke.
Previous
Matthies won the Kansas Class 5A state title in the 50-yard freestyle in 2005 and 2007 and the 100-yard freestyle in 2006 and 2007. A four-year letterwinner, she was named first-team all-state every season from 2003 to 2007, before earning the Kapaun Mount Carmel Swimmer-of-the-Year award as a senior. Following her high school career, Matthies was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame for her personal-best time of 24.26 in the 50-yard freestyle. A four-year letterwinner, Matthies led Kapaun Mount Carmel to the Wichita city championship in 2007.
Personal
The daughter of Ken and Susie Matthies, Meredith was born on Jan. 9, 1989 in Seoul, Korea. She has one sister, Mackenzie, and two brothers, Peter and Keenan. A general studies major, Meredith was a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 selection and was a seven-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
