    Freshman (1998-1999)
    Johnson earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, finishing 11th in the 400 IM (4:18.67) and swimming a leg on the Huskers' sixth-place 800 free relay. At the Big 12 Championships, she finished second in the 400 IM (4:20.22), third in the 1,650 free (16:56.43), seventh in the 200 IM (2:05.57) and swam on the NU winning 800 free relay. She qualified for the NCAA meet after a stellar showing at the Texas Invitational, where she finished second in the 400 IM in an NU record time (4:12.83) and also grabbed runner-up honors in the 200 back (1:59.71). She won three events at the Husker Shoot Out, including the 200 IM, 200 back and 400 IM. She won the 400 IM at the Big 12 Invitational. Johnson was named newcomer of the year by the coaching staff. 

    Before Nebraska
    At the 1996 Olympic Games, she won a bronze medal as a member of the 800-meter free relay team and finished in fifth in the 400 IM. She won the 400 IM at the 1997 Short Course World Championships. At the 1998 World Championships, she finished 15th in the 400 IM.
