Freshman (1996-97)
Elizabeth Fonfara eanred a NCAA Qualifying Zone D berth against Kansas in the final dual meet of the season with a third-place, one-meter springboard performance (259.35), her highest dual meet finish and best score of the season. At the Zone D meet, she recorded a season-best score across both of the springboards. She finished 34th on the three-meter (321.45) and 36th on the one-meter (273.75). A non-scoring team member at the Husker ShootOut, Fonfara gave solid efforts on the three-meter (293.00) and the one-meter (259.40, sixth). She dove exhibition for a large portion of the early season, but continued to improve and move up in the diving rotation. She was the winner of the team Craren Award for Most Improved Diver.
Before Nebraska
Fonfara finished second in the River Cities Conference in 1996 and sixth at the state championships on the one-meter board. As a member of the National Honor Society, Fonfara was also a letterwinner at the varsity level in swimming, volleyball and track. In addition, Fonfara dove for the Metro Omaha Diving team.

Elizabeth was born on April 20, 1978, to Michael and Jeanmarie Fonfara.
