Before Nebraska
Sophie Kissuk comes to Nebraska as one of Canada's top young swimmers. The native of Oakville, Ontario earned bronze in the long-course 200 backstroke (2:17.88) at the 2024 Speedo Canadian Championships in July, while adding fourth-place finishes in the 50-meter back (29.51), 100 back (1:03.31) and the 200 IM (2:20.64). She also placed 10th in the 400-meter IM (5:05.11). Later in the summer of 2024, Kissuk captured five individual titles at the Hall of Fame Meet in Ontario. She swept the 50 (29.90), 100 (1:03.39) and 200 backstrokes (2:17.15) while adding a win in the 200 IM (2:21.30) in short-course meters. She claimed her final title in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best SCM time of 2:44.35. She also took third in the 100 breast in a SCM personal-best 1:16.97. She also took gold in the LCM 200 IM (2:21.38) at the Ontario Summer Championships earlier in July of 2024. She added top-eight finishes in the 100 back (4th), 200 back (6th, 2:19.78), 400 IM (7th) and 200 free (2:09.00).
In May of 2024, Kissuk competed in the Canadian Olympic Trials, where she finished 18th in the 200 back (2:20.20), 30th in the 100 back (1:04.11) and 50th in the 200 IM (2:24.16). The competed for Etobicoke Swimming and the Oakville Aquatic Club prior to joining the Huskers.
Personal
The daughter of Steve and Tara Kissuk, Sophie was born on Feb. 22, 2007, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has one younger sister, Brooke. Sophie plans to major in marketing at Nebraska.
"Athletics have been a big part of my life since I was super little, and I cannot wait to continue with my love for swimming at Nebraska," Kissuk said. "I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity that has been given to me. Coach Pablo, Coach Pat and the team have welcomed me with open arms. I'm grateful for that. I am super-excited for the journey ahead. I feel like Nebraska is the best fit for me because it will continue to challenge me academically and athletically, while providing a great atmosphere for an amazing college experience. I can't wait to be part of the Husker family."
