Sophomore (2025-26)
Second-year swimmer Marissa Laurin amassed 18 top-five finishes throughout the 2025-26 season. Specializing in backstroke and individual medley events, Laurin harnessed two career bests at the conference championships.
At the 2026 Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., Laurin took 37th in the 100 back prelims with a career best time of 55.35. She additionally added a season-best time in the 200 back, where she swam a 1:58.86 in the event’s prelims. Her 29th-place finish in the prelims helped her to a 34th-place finish in the 400 IM prelims (4:21.14).
In the 200 IM time trials in Minneapolis, Laurin swam a time of 2:01.28 to hit a career mark in the event.
Laruin earned 11 top-three finishes throughout the year, six of which were second-place finishes. In the 400 IM, Laurin added two early second-place finishes against Iowa State (4:33.81) and Kansas (4:21.07).
Freshman (2024-25)
Laurin produced a promising debut season. The freshman from Alberta, Canada swam primarily in the 100 and 200 backstroke events as well as the 200 and 400 IM races. In a dual win over Kansas, Laurin logged a career best in the 100 backstroke touching the wall at 56.44. Later at the conference championships prelims, she took 27th with a 1:58.60 in the 200 back, marking her career best in the event.
Laurin collected two first-place finishes in the 200 IM on the season. Her first victory came against Iowa State on Oct. 25, and her second came at the Hawkeye Invitational prelims in November. She made impressive strides in the 200 backstroke as well, notching a second-place finish against Minnesota and South Dakota as well as Iowa State. Overall, she posted 21 top-five performances with more than half of them being top-three places.
Before Nebraska
Laurin joined the Huskers as an experienced swimmer in the backstroke and individual medley events. She is from Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada and swam for the Grand Prairie Piranhas, where she earned Swimmer of the Year and Most Improved Swimmer Awards. Laurin took third in the 200 backstroke at the Canada Summer Games and finished in the top-10 of her age group in Canada in various other events. She also helped her club team to a third-place finish in medium-sized teams in the provincial championships. At the 2024 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials, Laurin set a career-best in the 200 long-course backstroke prelims and finished 11th to qualify for the finals, where she set a new career-best of 2:15.70 and finished sixth-overall.
Personal
The daughter of Michael and Candice Laurin, Marissa was born on May 1, 2006. She has one sister, Mikayla. Laurin is studying accounting at the university and is a three-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. She was a member of the 2025 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
“I chose Nebraska because I know Pablo (Morales) and Patrick (Rowan) are great coaches and will help me improve in my sport and have created a positive team atmosphere that I am excited to be a part of,” Laurin said. “The academic and athletic support has far surpassed what I was looking for in a school and made the decision a lot easier.”
