2002 Season
Christine Latham rewrote the Nebraska record book in her final season as a Husker in 2002. The Calgary, Alberta, native was named to the first-team All-Big 12 squad and the NSCAA All-American team for the third consecutive season, contributing 35 points on 16 goals and three assists in 2002.
Against Kansas, Latham became Nebraska's all-time leading scorer with 147 points. From that point, she contributed 20 additional points to improve the record to 167 career points. She also leads all Huskers with 69 goals in her four years in a Nebraska uniform. Latham also set the career record for game-winning goals with 23, and she took more shots than anyone in Nebraska history, with 400 in her career.
She followed up the record-setting game at Kansas with her first multiple-goal game of the season in a 4-0 win over Missouri. Latham was consistent throughout the 2002 season, scoring in 14 games, and producing eight game-winning goals. She scored 1.40 points per game in 2002, and took 4.44 shots per contest.
Latham dominated the 2002 Big 12 Tournament, turning in her best performance of the season against No. 5 Texas. She left the Longhorn defenders in her dust twice, to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper, winning both times for the two goals that kept the Huskers' championship hopes alive.
She also knocked in the first goal of the tournament against the Kansas Jayhawks. Her three goals in the tournament pushed her school record to 28 career points in Big 12 Tournament play. For her effort in the conference tournament, she was named the 2002 Big 12 Tournament Offensive MVP.
In the NCAA Tournament, Latham contributed two game-winning goals against Hartford and Yale in the first two rounds. She sent in a solid shot from 30 yards out to put the Huskers in front of Yale to move on to the Sweet 16.
Latham tried to keep Nebraska's Elite Eight hopes alive against Santa Clara, scoring the Huskers' first goal after beating Bronco defender Chardonnay Poole to put the ball past the keeper at the 35:32 mark. Despite Latham's outstanding effort, Nebraska came up short, 3-2, against SCU.
2001 Season
The 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year, Latham scored a conference-best 18 goals, including five game winners and added 10 assists. She scored at least one point in 19 of 22 contests, and posted six multiple-goal games.
A 2001 Hermann Trophy finalist, Latham's 15 career multiple-goal games rank her first in school history, while her 53 goals put her in a tie for first on NU's all-time chart.
Latham's performance earned her third-team NSCAA All-America honors, as well as first team Soccer Buzz All-America accolades. She was also named to the NSCAA All-Central Region Team. Latham was named Big 12 offensive player of the week for the week of Sept. 15, 2001, and was named to the Soccer America team of the week for the week of Oct. 15-21, 2001.
With 46 points, Latham ranked first in the league moving to No. 2 on Nebraska's all-time scoring chart with 132 career points. Latham trails former Husker Meghan Anderson (146 points). She scored four points in the 2001 Big 12 Tournament to bring her career total to a school-record 22 points.
Also a Missouri Athletic Club and Soccer Buzz National Player-of-the-Year Finalist for the second consecutive season, Latham is tied for first in school history with 15 career game-winning goals.
2000 Season
A powerful and relentless competitor, Latham scored 57 points on 23 goals and 10 assists on her way to earning both Big 12 Player-of-the-Year and All-America honors. She scored at least one goal in all but seven games, and notched six multiple-goal games.
Latham's 57 points marked the second-best single-season offensive output in Husker history, behind Kim Engesser's 61-point effort in 1998. Latham's 23 goals put her at No. 3 on the Nebraska single-season chart, behind Kim Engesser's 27 (1998) and 26 (1997).
The Big 12 Conference Tournament MVP, Latham scored three goals and added three assists, as the Huskers won three straight games in San Antonio, Texas, to take home their second consecutive league tournament title. Latham's 18 career points in Big 12 Tournament games rank first in school history.
Latham earned offensive player-of-the-week honors from the conference on both Oct. 2 and Oct. 9, posting a total of 11 points against Missouri, Kansas, Texas and Texas A&M. In regular-season league action, Latham posted 12 goals and 29 points in 10 games.
A member of the Canadian National Team and the Under-20 National Team, Latham earned a starting job at forward for the Canadians at the Pacific Cup and the Gold Cup during the summer of 2000.
1999 Season
Latham made an instant impact as a true freshman on a veteran Nebraska squad in 1999, tying Jenny Benson for third on the team with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists. Latham's 12 goals trailed only Meghan Anderson's 21 for the team lead. Latham posted game-winning goals in Nebraska's regular-season win over Missouri and in the Huskers' 2-1 win over the Tigers in the Big 12 title game.
She added game-winnning assists against Connecticut and Kansas. Latham appeared in 23 games and made four starts, which came in the regular season against Texas A&M, Texas, Denver and Missouri. She notched her first career goal in a 6-0 win over Oral Roberts and added her first career assist in a 5-1 win at Kentucky.
Latham produced three multiple-goal games with two goals and four points against Colorado and Missouri in the regular season, and Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament.
High School
Lord Beaverbrook did not sponsor high school soccer, but Latham did participate in basketball and track.
Other Information
Latham scored one of Canada's four goals during the Canadian National Team's European Tour in June 2001. She also played with the Canadian National Team at the Pacific Cup and the Gold Cup during the summer of 2000. Latham accumulated 18 caps in 2000 and 2001 for the Canadian National Team.
Along with being a Canadian National Team and Under-20 National teammate of Breanna Boyd, Latham joined Boyd on the Alberta Provincial Team that won three consecutive Canadian national championships. Latham and Boyd earned silver and bronze medals as members of the provincial team. Latham also joined Boyd on the Western Canadian All-Star Team and an Under-19 Select Team from Calgary.
Latham led her club team, the Calgary Celtic Warriors, to a national title, scoring a hat trick in the championship game. The Celtic Warriors, coached by Bill Khouri, were presented with the Golden Boot Award as the top club team in Canada as voted by Canadian coaches.
Personal Information
Christine is the daughter of Beth Latham and Brian Latham, and has two brothers, David, 21, and Evan, 15. Christine is a sociology major. She was born Sept. 15, 1981, in Calgary, Alberta.
