2002 Season
A three-time All-Big 12 and All-Central Region defender, Breanna (pronounced bree-ANN-uh) Boyd was outstanding in the Nebraska defense in her final season, leaving a legacy as one of the greatest defenders in Nebraska school history. In 2002, she helped Nebraska post a 0.86 goals-against average while scoring three goals in 2002 to bring her career total to 12.
Boyd started 72 career games for the Huskers in her career and did double duty during 2002, starting for the Canadian National Team as it qualified for the 2003 World Cup. She missed Nebraska's first two games of the Big 12 Tournament, but returned to play 74 minutes in the title game against Texas A&M.
In the first week of the season, Boyd was named to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week for her outstanding play in the adidas Invitational versus No. 2 North Carolina and Wisconsin.
Scoring goals against Belmont, Drake and Oklahoma State in 2002, Boyd showed an offensive flare.
She was also honored for her academic accomplishments in her senior season, being named a first-team NSCAA Academic All-American, a first-team academic All-Big 12 team member, and earning Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII honors.
2001 Season
The Huskers' most experienced defender, Boyd helped Nebraska post a 1.16 goals-against average in 2001, while recording seven shutouts. Boyd was recognized for her prowess in the backfield for the second consecutive year, being named first-team All-Big 12 and NSCAA First-Team All-Central Region.
Offensively, Boyd scored two goals, including a scoring shot against Evansville and a 40-yard boot against Oklahoma State that sailed over the goalkeeper's head. She also posted two assists.
Rewarded for her work in the classroom, Boyd was named first-team Academic All-Big 12 for the second consecutive season and earned Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for District VII.
2000 Season
Named first-team All-Big 12 and first team academic All-Big 12 in 2000, Boyd helped the Huskers surrender just 10 goals in 2000, while shutting out a school-record 16 opponents.
Boyd was recognized for her defensive skills when she was named the most valuable player of the 2000 UConn Classic (Sept. 15-17), as NU shut out Dartmouth and then-No. 20 Connecticut. Boyd also earned Big 12 Defender-of-the-Week honors on Oct. 23, after helping Nebraska limit Colorado and Texas Tech to a combined four shots on goal. Boyd and teammate Jenny Benson were the only non-keepers to earn conference defender-of-the-week honors in 2000.
Offensively, Boyd contributed eight points on three goals and two assists. The Calgary, Alberta, native booted the game-winner against Creighton on Sept. 24.
The Nebraska defense, which posted a goals-against average of 0.42, broke the school's goals-against record of 0.54, set in 1999.
1999 Season
Boyd scored key goals in Husker wins over No. 22 Baylor in the Big 12 semifinals and No. 25 Missouri in the Big 12 title game. She added the game-winning goal in Nebraska's 1-0 win over No. 11 Texas A&M in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Boyd finished with nine points on four goals and one assist, while appearing in 24 of Nebraska's 25 games. She earned starts against Denver, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, and scored her first career goal and assist at Colorado.
High School
Boyd's high school did not sponsor soccer but she was a member of the Sir Winston Churchill High School volleyball team that won the city championship and was a member of the field hockey team that also won a city title. Boyd also earned high honors as a student the last two years and did volunteer work at a local hospital.
Other Information
A two-year starter for the Canadian National Team, Boyd is also a member of the Canadian Under-20 National Team. She played club soccer for the Foothills Panthers and Coach Jeff Dunlop. Boyd and Christine Latham led the Alberta Provincial Team to three straight national titles.
Personal Information
Breanna is the daughter of Barry Boyd and Tony and Carol Meibock. Breanna has a brother, Adam, 17, and a sister, Mikaella, 6. Breanna's parents, Barry and Carol, were members of the Canadian National Track and Field Team, while her stepfather, Tony Meibock, was a Canadian speed skater in the 1992 Winter Olympics. Breanna's grandparents, Geoff and Pam Elliott, were also Olympians. Geoff finished eighth in the decathlon and Pam was a European champion in the hurdles. Breanna owns a 3.38 GPA as a biological sciences major. She was born on June 10, 1981, in Edmonton, Alberta.
