2001 Season
A tremendous all-around athlete, Danica (pronounced DAN-uh-cuh) Carey started the season off with a bang, scoring game-winning goals in Nebraska's first two contests. She put a ball in the net in NU's 4-2 victory over Arizona, and scored the Huskers' second goal in a 2-1 win over Alabama-Birmingham.
Carey also posted an assist in Nebraska's 4-2 win over the then-10th-ranked Texas A&M. She scored five points on two goals and one assist in 2001.
Carey started 16 games as a senior and played in 79 games in her career as a Husker, including every game as a senior.
Carey was recognized for her excellence in the classroom by being named second-team academic All-Big 12. She graduated in May 2002, with a degree in marketing.
2000 Season
Carey saw action in each of Nebraska's 24 games, scoring eight points on two goals and four assists. Her second goal of the season came against then-20th-ranked Connecticut on Sept. 17, when Carey came off the bench to score the game winner. Carey also posted a goal against Drury on Sept. 3, and recorded assists against Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Richmond (in the NCAA Tournament).
Carey was named first-team academic All-Big 12 for her outstanding performance in the classroom in 2000.
1999 Season
Carey enjoyed a successful sophomore campaign by finishing with seven points on two goals and three assists. She scored the first goal of her career in Nebraska's win over Tulsa on Sept. 24, and added her second goal in the Huskers' win at Colorado on Oct. 10. She added key assists in Nebraska's Big 12 Tournament wins over Texas Tech and No. 22 Baylor. Carey notched her first assist of the year against Oral Roberts.
1998 Season
Carey made 11 appearances for the Huskers as a true freshman in 1998, scoring the first point of her career on an assist in Nebraska's 11-0 win over Loyola-Chicago.
High School
Carey earned second-team All-California Interscholastic Federation and second-team All-Western League honors as a senior at San Diego's University High School. She helped lead the Dons to their eighth consecutive CIF title in 1998, with a 19-4-3 record for Coach Butch Lee.
Carey was voted the team's offensive MVP as a senior midfielder/forward and was a two-year starter. In addition to earning two letters in soccer, Carey earned one letter in volleyball and four letters in track and field. She won Western League titles in the triple jump, long jump and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay.
She finished third at the CIF finals with a career-best triple jump of 36-10. She owns personal bests of 16-4 in the long jump, 5-2 in the high jump and 2:27 in the 800-meter run. She was named the track team's co-most valuable athlete and was chosen as the Pepsi Girls Spring Athlete of the Year.
Carey was also an excellent student, earning academic All-California Interscholastic Federation honors in soccer and track. She was a member of the honor roll, the student council and campus ministry.
Other Information
Carey played club soccer for the Under-18 Nomads in 1997-98. The Nomads won the Celtic Cup and advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament despite missing two starters. Carey played for Coach John Miller and the Surf Soccer Club Under-16 and Under-17 teams from 1995 to 1997. She also played for Coach Raffele Ruotolo on the Crusader Soccer Club Under-13 and Under-14 teams from 1993 to 1995.
Personal Information
The daughter of Michael and Wendy Carey, Danica has one sister, Drisana, 23, who was an outside hitter for the University of Syracuse volleyball team. Danica graduated in May 2002 with a 3.144 GPA in marketing. She was born Nov. 12, 1980.
