1999 Season
One of the most dominant defenders in the nation, Sharolta Nonen (pronounced Sha-RAWL-ta NO-nen) claimed a spot as one of the greatest female athletes in Nebraska history after becoming Nebraska soccer's first three-time All-American and second NSCAA First-Team All-American in 1999.
As a senior, Nonen became the first defender to capture Big 12 Player-of-the-Year honors while grabbing first-team All-Big 12 accolades for the third consecutive season. She was also named the Big 12 Tournament Defensive MVP after leading Nebraska to its third Big 12 Tournament title. Along the way, she became the first Husker to earn a third straight all-tournament award.
Nonen ended her career as the school record holder with 93 games played. She also ranked second with 35 career assists, trailing only Jenny Benson. Nonen's 16 assists and 0.64 assists per game ranked 13 nationally.
A three-time NSCAA First-Team All-Central Region pick, Nonen led the Huskers to the best season in school history with a 22-1-2 record and a final No. 5 national ranking. Nebraska also finished fifth nationally in team scoring defense with a 0.54 team goals-against average.
Nonen also joined Lindsay Eddleman, Isabelle Morneau and Amy Walsh in the Umbro Select All-Star Classic.
She capped her brilliant career by being chosen as one of the 25 Women of Distinction by the Nebraska Athletic Department in 2000. The award was presented to Nonen as one of the 25 greatest female athletes in Husker history as part of Nebraska's Silver Anniversary celebration of women's athletics.
1998 Season
Nonen earned NSCAA Second-Team All-America honors after capturing first-team All-Big 12 and All-Central Region and Big 12 All-Tournament honors for the second straight year. She posted the game-winning assist in teh Huskers' 4-0 win over Missouri in the Big 12 Tournament title game and scored the second of Nebraska's three goals in a 3-2 triple-overtime win over Texas A&M in the semifinals.
She led the Huskers with 10 assists, including an NU single-season record four game winners, to finish tied for fifth on the squad with 14 points. She scored her first goal of the year against Loyola-Chicago and added two assists to tie a career-high with four points. She was one of only seven players to start all 22 games for Nebraska.
Along with sharing Nebraska's Top All-Around Player Award with fellow All-America defender Isabelle Morneau, None was named Nebraska's Most Consistent Player.
1997 Season
None earned NSCAA Third-Team All-America honors as a sophomore defender. She earned first-team All-Central Region, All-Big 12 and All-Big 12 Tournament honors. None finished fourth on the team with six assists, including the game winner against No. 10 Minnesota. She added assists in wins over Southern California, No. 14 Vanderbilt, Arkansas, San Diego and Oklahoma State. She shared Nebraska's Top All Around Player Award with Kari Uppinghouse.
1996 Season
Nonen was one of the Huskers' top performers off the bench, scoring 11 points on four goals and three assists while playing in all 24 games in 1996. She claimed third-team freshman All-America and first-team freshman All-Central Region honors from Soccer Buzz and added NSCAA Third-Team All-Central Region honors. She also earned the Huskers' Top All-Around Player Award. None scored her first goal of her career in a 6-0 win at Iowa State. She added goals against Colorado, Missouri and Texas Tech. She posted her first assist in a 3-1 win at No. 6 Duke, and notched two assists in NU's 10-2 win over Colorado. In the win over CU, she set a career-high with four points.
High School
Nonen played soccer for Coach Micheal Finch at Kitsilano Secondary School, but statistics and records were not maintained.
Other Information
As a starting defender, Nonen joined Huskers Isabelle Morneau, Amy Walsh, Karina LeBlanc, Tanya Franck and Coach John Walker on the 1999 Canadian Women's World Cup Team. Nonen rejoined the national team in 2000 and spent time with the team during the summer of 1997 but did not play with the national team in 1998.
None was a five-time provincial all-star as a club player in Vancouver. Her Under-19 team, Dunbar West, made it to the semifinals of the British Columbia Provinvial A Cup in 1995-96. She led the Vancouver Hurricanes to the Under-17 British Columbia Provincial B Cup championship in 1992. Nonen led British Columbia's provincial team to the semifinals of the Under-19 Canadian National Championships in July 1995. British Columbia tied Alberta in the semifinals, but Alberta advanced to the finals by tiebreaker procedure. Ontario won the provinvial crown.
Person Information
The daughter of Joe and the late Ola Nonen, Sharolta has a sister, Misha, 27. Sharolta is a sociology major. She was born Dec. 30, 1977.
