Alicia Sawyer Season 2002-03

Outlook
An experienced competitor, Alicia Sawyer (pronounced AH-lee-sha) is expected to come in and contribute immediately to the Husker team. Sawyer could challenge for a place among Nebraska's top four shooters in both the air and smallbore rifles.

"Alicia has done well in competition, and the scores she has achieved have been accomplished with minimal practice from her high school years," Coach Karen Anthony said. "When she moves to practicing consistently five days or more per week, I expect that her performance will move up in both rifles."

As a junior competitor
Coached by her father, Larry, who is also a competitive shooter, Alicia was a two-time Minnesota Junior Olympic air rifle champion and also won the 2000 NRA National Junior Three-Position rifle championship. A three-time Minnesota State air rifle champion in the junior division (1998, 1999 and 2000), Sawyer won back-to-back Minnesota junior gallery rifle titles in 2000 and 2001.

In June, Sawyer captured the USA Shooting Junior Olympic Three-Position Sporter Air Rifle title, with a two-day total score of 1,173.6. At the 2001 NRA National Outdoor Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, in late July, Sawyer won the Three-position smallbore title in the sharpshooter junior category with a score of 2,130.

Personal
The daughter of Larry and Jonell Sawyer, Alicia was born Sept. 25, 1983, in Minneapolis, Minn. She has two brothers, Richard, 21, and Ryan, 19. Alicia is a theatre major.
