2022-23: Graduate
In his farewell season, William Gleason posted career numbers for the Big Red. For the first time since his freshman season, Gleason posted a winning record in spring play, going 8-7 and 11-13 with the fall season included. Where Gleason really thrived this season was in doubles, posting a 16-8 spring record and a 20-11 overall record. Included in that total was an impressive run in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in March, where partnered with Calvin Mueller, the duo won their first six matches before dropping the championship match. Gleason picked up his final win at the Dillon Tennis Center on Senior Day, as he clinched the match victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win on Court 4.
Off the court, Gleason was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on March 8 for his performance at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships. He was also named to the 2023 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
2021-22: Senior
Gleason saw extensive action during his senior season for the Huskers. Gleason tallied 10 singles victories for the Big Red and eight doubles victories. Gleason posted a 4-12 singles record in the spring, which was highlighted by two consecutive straight-set victories over conference foes. Gleason, who went 6-4 in singles play during the fall, posted a 1-2 mark in No. 5 singles and a 3-2 record in No. 6 singles.
In the classroom, Gleason earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and was named Academic All-Big Ten for the second time. Gleason also earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, which is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through citizenship and ethical behavior.
2020-21: Junior
After strong freshman and sophomore seasons, Gleason won four singles matches and three doubles matches during the spring 2021 season. Gleason went 4-12 overall in singles play, competing at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots. In doubles play, Gleason teamed up with four different partners to post a 3-14 overall record and competed in all three positions. He played a key role in Nebraska’s win over Iowa, posting a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) in No. 3 singles. Gleason’s season was also highlighted by singles wins over Wisconsin, Michigan State and Northwestern, along with a doubles win in the Big Ten Tournament alongside partner, Patrick Cacciatore.
Gleason also saw success in the classroom as an Academic All-Big Ten selection and a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
2019-20: Sophomore (Year of Eligibility Restored Due to COVID-19 Pandemic)
Gleason won six singles matches and three doubles matches during his sophomore season. Gleason's year was highlighted by his win over No. 69 Conrado Summaria of Pepperdine on Feb. 28 in Lincoln (2-6, 7-6, 10-8). Gleason was the only Husker to defeat a ranked opponent during the 2019-20 season. Gleason won matches out of the No. 2 (1-4) and No. 3 (1-1) spots in the lineup during the spring season, which was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Off the court, Gleason earned a spot on the Academic All-Big Ten team and made the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall semester.
2018-19: Freshman
Gleason closed out a stellar freshman season with a 12-9 spring record, including a team-best 6-4 mark in Big Ten play -- that was the highest conference record by a Huskers since three-time All-Big Ten selection Dusty Boyer went 4-7 in his senior season.
Gleason's most impressive win took place on April 5, when the Huskers took on No. 1 Ohio State. The Lincoln Southwest grad overcame Buckeye senior Martin Joyce in a three-set thriller, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 10-5 for Nebraska's sole win of the match. That was Joyce's fourth loss of the season at the time, and only his second in Big Ten play.
Gleason teamed up with senior Toby Boyer for Nebraska's No. 1 doubles team most of the season, as both upset two nationally-ranked opponents in Big Ten competition. Boyer/Gleason concluded the season at 8-11 overall (6-10 Spring, 3-6 Big Ten).
Before Nebraska
A four-star recruit out of Lincoln Southwest High School in Nebraska, Gleason was ranked No. 138 nationally and climbed as high as No. 76 in the 16 and Under Singles in 2016. Gleason is a three-time Nebraska High School Boys Class A Singles champion. He chose Nebraska over Cal Poly, Oregon and Omaha. He was named to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Junior Leadership Team in 2017.
Personal
The son of Jim and Susan Gleason, Will was born on Nov. 8, 1999. A communication studies major, Will earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May 2022. A four-time Academic All-Big Ten choice, he is a seven-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection. He is also a five-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. Gleason was named to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Junior Leadership Team in 2017.
