2023-24: Senior
In his final season with the Big Red, senior captain Shunya Maruyama tallied 20 singles wins, to tally a combined total of 137 singles and doubles wins as a Husker. Maruyama’s wins notched the psychology major in the No. 8 spot on the top career singles wins record list, passing Marc Herrmann (2012-16) with 70 career wins. Maruyama earned a 20-11 season singles record, and 18-9 season doubles record, playing consistently at No. 3 singles and doubles. The fifth year had Big Ten wins over Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue and Penn State in the regular season, and Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals. Maruyama’s victory over Illinois’ Petrov clinched the Big Red defeat of #26 Illinois in the Big Ten Quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals for the first time in program history. Maruyama concludes his Husker career with 67 career doubles wins and five decorated years with the team.
Off the court, Maruyama was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row and named to the 2024 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for the fourth time.
2022-23: Senior
Shunya Maruyama had a successful fourth season for the Big Red, going 13-13 in singles, including 8-7 in the spring, and 18-11 in doubles, with a 15-7 mark in spring competition. Maruyama was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on March 1 for his effort in Nebraska’s upset win over No. 38 Alabama on February 25. Maruyama also picked up his 50th career singles victory with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the No. 3 spot against on Wisconsin on April 22. Maruyama was a strong force in the doubles department, especially in conference play, as he posted a 6-2 record against Big Ten opponents. He finished the season going 6-1 in his last seven doubles matches.
Off the court, Maruyama was named to the 2023 Tom Osborne Citizenship team.
2021-22: Junior
Maruyama continued to make his mark on the Husker program as the junior from Nagano, Japan, earned nine singles victories in the spring for a 16-14 overall record. His 16 singles victories ranked second on the team, and he tallied three conference wins (Michigan State, Purdue and Penn State). In doubles, Maruyama partnered with Dario Huber and recorded a 19-14 mark.
Maruyama also continued to impress off the court as he was named to the 2022 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
2020-21: Sophomore
After a strong freshman season and start to the 2021 season, Maruyama took over Nebraska's No. 1 singles position. The sophomore from Nagano, Japan, earned eight singles wins in the spring for an 8-12 overall record, an impressive mark competing at every position in the lineup. His eight singles victories ranked first on the team and two of his 12 losses came to ranked opponents, including one top-20 player. Arguably his biggest singles win of the season was a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Penn State’s No. 1 player at the Big Ten Tournament in Lincoln. In doubles, Maruyama had a 7-10 overall record in the spring with wins over Wisconsin, Northwestern and Minnesota at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Maruyama was also a standout in the classroom during his sophomore season, capturing Academic All-Big Ten honors. He was also a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2020 and earned the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award for the 2020-21 season.
2019-20: Freshman (Year of Eligibility Restored Due to COVID-19 Pandemic)
Maruyama was impressive for the Huskers during a freshman season that was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Maruyama led the Big Red with 18 total victories and 13 singles wins, and he ranked third on the team with five doubles victories. Maruyama posted a 6-5 singles record during the spring, leading the team in wins. Among his six victories was a win over Iowa's Nikita Snezhko in his Big Ten debut. Maruyama, who went 7-4 in singles play during the fall, posted a 1-1 record in No. 4 singles, a 3-4 mark in No. 5 singles and a 2-0 record in No. 6 singles. In doubles play,Maryuama finished 5-8 on the season.
In the classroom, Maruyama also earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the both the fall and spring semesters.
Before Nebraska
Maruyama came to Nebraska from Nagano, Japan. He was a four-time ITF junior doubles champion and was also a finalist in singles at an ITF junior tournament in 2018.
Personal
The son of Tsuyoshi and Terumi Maruyama, Shunya was born on Jan. 29, 2001. He is the younger brother of Sayaka Maruyama. A psychology major, Shunya was a 2023 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a five-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Nebraska's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner for men's tennis in 2023, he is three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
