Fungai Tongoona

Fungai Tongoona completed his sixth season coaching the Huskers alongside Head Coach Kerry McDermott in 2017-18. 

Originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, Tongoona was a four-year letterman for McDermott and the Huskers from 1999 through 2002. He returned to Nebraska for the start of the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach. He spent four seasons helping the Huskers before being promoted to associate head coach in 2016-17.

"Fungai has done an outstanding job for me over the last few years and continues to pursue excellence on and off the court with our men's tennis program," McDermott said.

In his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Huskers in 2015-16, Tongoona helped Nebraska to a 14-13 overall record that included three victories over nationally ranked opponents. The Huskers also battled to a 4-7 record in the powerful Big Ten, while senior Dusty Boyer earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the third consecutive season. Boyer was also a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection for the Huskers.

Tongoona also helped Dusty and Toby Boyer to a Big Ten Indoor Doubles championship during the fall season, while aiding Toby Boyer's run to a Big Ten Indoor Singles runner-up finish as a true freshman.

Off the court, the Husker men's tennis team earned Nebraska's 2016 Herman Team GPA Award by posting a cumulative 3.418 grade-point average.

Tongoona also helped the Huskers make the transition into playing their first season at Nebraska's fantastic new Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center, which features championship-caliber indoor and outdoor courts and facilities. 

In 2015, the Huskers managed an 11-14 overall record and a 3-8 Big Ten mark while Dusty Boyer earned All-Big Ten honors. It followed a 12-15 record and 3-8 Big Ten showing in 2014, when Dusty Boyer earned All-Big Ten accolades for the first time.

In Tongoona's first season as an assistant coach with the Husker program In 2013, Nebraska battled to a 10-15 overall record and a 2-9 Big Ten mark. The Huskers finished the season ranked No. 62 in the final ITA standings for 2013. 

A two-year captain as a player for the Huskers in 2001 and 2002, Tongoona capped his Nebraska playing career with a 12-16 singles mark and a 17-12 record in doubles as a senior.  He was named the men's tennis lifter-of-the-year as a sophomore in 1999-2000 and was a second-team academic All-Big 12 performer that same season.

Off the court, he also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board during his time at Nebraska and was honored by the Big 12 with a community outreach award in 2000. He graduated with a degree in marketing and minor in French from Nebraska in 2003.

Tongoona has been a certified tennis teaching professional since 2002, serving as head professional at Southlake (Texas) Tennis Center, as well as the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln. Prior to returning to Lincoln, Tongoona served as the teaching professional at the DFW Hilton in Grapevine, Texas. He is also certified as a personal trainer and Tennis Trainer.
