1993-94: Burkett Powell was a steady force for Nebraska over his career. He had been around Husker gymnastics since he picked up the sport attending the Nebraska School of Gymnastics. He lettered all four years of his Nebraska career. During his senior season with the Huskers, Powell earned a second-place finish on parallel bars with a score of 9.40 at the 1994 NCAA Championships, where he earned All-America accolades.
1992-93: At the NCAA West Regional in Norman, Okla., Powell scored career bests on the pommel horse (9.625) and parallel bars (9.75), along with a 9.65 on the floor exercise and 9.35 on the high bar. He was also a force at the Big Eight Championships, as he placed in four events, finishing second in the floor exercise (9.675) and parallel bars (9.65), and third on still rings (9.50) and high bar (9.60). At a dual in New Mexico, Powell set career bests with a 9.75 on floor exercise, and a 9.725 on still rings anda 9.80 on high bar. He won the parallel bars at the Rocky Mountain Open and Big Eight Invidtational with score of 9.65 and 9.55, respectively.
1991-92: He competed in at least five events in every meet of the season and in the all-around twice. Powell then-set career bests of 9.60 on floor exercise and 9.65 on the parallel bars, while tying a career mark on the pommel horse at 9.40 and on the horizontal bar at 9.70. He scored 9.65 on the pommel horse at the Big Eight Championships, which tied him for second place with teammate Josh Saegert. Powell was named to the Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight honor roll with a 3.52 grade-point average.
1990-91: He competed in the all-around on nine different occasions, second only to senior team captain Brad Bryan. His top three all-around scores came during Nebraska's three home meets.
Personal: The son of Richard and Vicki Powell, Burkett was born Jan. 9, 1972, in Lincoln. Powell is married to the former Kara-Jean Scott, and the couple has one son, Burkett II. Burkett, an industrial engineer major and graduate of Lincoln High, has one sister, Shalla.
