1994: Senior Season
An All-American in the all-around, two-time All-American Sumner Darling captured fifth place in the all-around...one of the top student-athletes in the classroom in school history, joined an elite group of three-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports by becoming a two-time first-team academic All-American in 1994...finished in seventh-place at the NCAA West Regional in the all-around (56.750)...won the horizontal bar at the Minnesota Triangular, posting a score of 9.70..earned Phillips 66 Academic All-Big Eight honors for the third consecutive year.
1993: Junior Season
At the NCAA Championships, Darling finished fourth in the all-around. Darling finished seventh in the floor exercise, but needed to place in the top six for All-America honors (teammate Richard Grace won the event)...won the all-around with a 56.40 in a dual with Penn State... set career bests with scores of 9.85 on the floor exercise and 9.75 on the still rings in a dual at New Mexico...finished second at the Big Eight Triangular with a 9.55 on the vault...captured first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.
1992: Sophomore Season
Earned third-team COSIDA Academic All-America honors with a 3.755 grade-point average in electrical engineering...one of only five Huskers to compete in every meet of the season...led Nebraska with a 9.53 average on the horizontal bar...posted a career-high 9.75 on the event during a Feb. 2 dual with Ohio State and tied the mark March 1 in the Big Eight Triangular...his final NCAA three-score avarage in the horizontal bar was 9.72, which ranked 10th nationally...one of his four all-around appearances came at the NCAA Championships, where he posted a career-best 56.55...also at the championship meet, he scored career bests of 9.75 on the pommel horse and a 9.85 on the parallel bars, the latter of which was good enough for second-team All-America honors...finished 25th overall at the USA Championships.
1991: Freshman Season
Darling competed in every meet despite a nagging back injury and turned in team-best all-around scores of 55.55 at Ohio State and 55.45 at the Rocky Mountain Open...his 9.35 average on the parallel bars also led the team...had the 23rd-best socere among qualifiers for the 1991 USA Championships and finished 35th overall, two spots behind teammate Che Bowers.

The son of Ann Darling, Sumner was born March 16, 1972...the electrical engineering major and 1990 graduate of Pocono Mountain High School has one brother, Glenn.
