1982 (Senior): With seven individual NCAA titles under his belt, Jim Hartung’s place in NCAA gymnastics history is secure. Only one other gymnast has ever won seven individual gold medals (Joe Giallombardo of Illinois in 1938-40). In addition Hartung led Nebraska to four consecutive team titles, a feat equaled by one other team (Illinois from 1939-42 but Giallombardo was on only three of those squads). All told, Hartung's combined total of 11 NCAA gold medals stands alone. He also became the first man to win three NCAA ring titles. In recognition of his achievements, Hartung was awarded the 1982 Nissen Award, which is awarded to the nations top senior gymnast.
1981 (Junior): After winning his second consecutive NCAA all-around title last spring, Jim Hartung has become the top male gymnast in the United States. In November Hartung lead the US. squad to the World Championships in Moscow. For his accomplishments in 1981. Hartung was named the USGF Male Athlete of the Year. Set the tone for the Huskers third consecutive NCAA team title when he scored a 9.75 on the rings to win the All-Around title. Hartung's 9.75 also won the rings title for the set out! straight year. The only gymnast to qualify for the individual finals in each of the six events, Hartung missed making all-American in only one event (vault). His all-around total for the Saturday night session, though not official, would have set an NCAA record for the all around (58.55, an average of 9.75 per event). This year’s World Championships will mark Hartung’s third trip, having finished 39th in 1978 and 9th in 1979 (the US. boycotted the 1980 event). In the Big 8 in 1981 Hartung finished second in the All-Around and won the rings and pommell horse. In three years of Big 8 competition, Hartung has never lost the rings title. Has been bothered somewhat by a dislocated finger this fall but still was able to win the Big 8 Invitational All-Around. Came to Nebraska as the No. 1 prep gymnast after an outstanding career at Omaha South where he competed with Husker teammate Phil Cahoy and Assistant Chuck Chmelka. Won a total of 18 gold medals at the Nebraska state gymnastics meet. Became the first gymnast to be honored as the Nebraska High School Athlete of the Year.
