2006 (Senior): Advanced to the event finals on the floor exercise (8.10) at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 13 ? Finished fifth on the floor (8.35) at the Stanford Open on Jan. 21 ? Tied senior Tony Burtle for third-place on the floor (8.80) against Iowa on Feb. 12 ? Set season-high scores of 9.00 on the floor exercise and 8.40 on high bar against Oklahoma on March 5 en route to finishing third and fifth respectively in those events ? Notched a season-high score of 9.25 on the vault against Oklahoma and Stanford on March 11 for second in the event ? Tied for first-place on the vault (9.20) with Burtle against Air Force on March 19 ? Also set season-high scores of 8.65 on the still rings and 8.70 on the high bar against the Falcons ? Finished third on the vault with a season-high score of 9.325 at the MPSF Championships.

2005 (Junior): After undergoing knee surgery in the offseason, Matthews returned to the Nebraska lineup in time for the 2005 season ? Competed on the floor exercise, still rings, vault and high bar for the Huskers and earned a career-high 9.35 to tie for third-place on the vault against Oklahoma in NU’s first home dual ? Consistently landed scores in the nines on the apparatus and became a major contributor on the event ? Earned a season best score of 8.70 twice on the high bar, against Oklahoma and in Nebraska’s win over Iowa ? Took on floor exercise responsibilities at the MPSF Championships and earned a solid score of 8.65 ? Went on to score a 9.25 on the vault at the NCAA Championships, just missing out on advancing to the event preliminaries in that event.
2004 (Sophomore): In his second season with the Huskers, Matthews competed across the board throughout the year ? Led the Huskers against Minnesota by landing career-high marks on the floor exercise (9.1) and pommel horse (8.4) ? Earned second on the floor exercise and third in the all-around (51.20), an event that he had not competed in since midway through the 2003 season ? Earned a career best on the still rings against Ohio State with a score of 9.05 ? Hit personal bests on the vault (9.25) and all-around (52.425) in NU’s last regular-season meet ? Became the only Husker to advance to the event finals at the MPSF Championships, where he finished eighth on the vault with a score of 8.45.
2003 (Freshman): One of two freshmen hailing from Lincoln, Matthews put up high scores on the vault (9.15), floor exercise (8.95) and high bar (8.70) during his first season as a Husker ? Competed in the all-around for the only time during the season at the Rocky Mountain Open, scoring a 47.90 ? Was the only Husker freshman represented at the individual event finals at the MPSF Championships where he scored an 8.70 in the floor exercise to place sixth ? Reached the finals in that event by scoring a season-high 8.95 during the team competition ? Suffered a knee injury during warm-ups of the NCAA Championships and was unable to compete.
Prior: A native of Lincoln, Matthews attended <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>SoutheastHigh School where he earned three letters under Coach Darrel Watermier. Along with his participation in high school gymnastics, Matthews was also active at the Nebraska School of Gymnastics under the direction of Husker assistant coach Chuck Chmelka. Along with Derric Wood, Jason Wassung, Stephen T?trault and T.J. Schmidt, Matthews is one of five current gymnasts to have entered the NU program after competing for Chmelka. Matthews is a five-time Junior Olympic competitor and finished 23rd in the all-around and recorded a 9.0 on floor to tie for 19th in that event in 2002.
Personal: Nic was born May 10, 1983, to John and Diana Matthews in Zimbabwe, Africa. He has three brothers, Ben, 23, Nate, 22, Tyler, 12, and one sister, Desiree, 17. Nic and Nate are twins. Nic is a finance major at Nebraska.
