Career

Prior to the 1996 season, Larry Townsend left the team. He finished his Husker playing career with nine tackles (four solo), one tackle for a three-yard loss, an eight-yard sack and three quarterback hurries.

1995 (Junior)

Battling a knee strain for most of the season, Townsend played in five games for the Huskers, serving as a backup defensive tackle behind All-Big Eight tackles Christian Peter and Jeff Ogard. Townsend had just one solo tackle against Michigan State and did not play against Arizona State, Pacific, Washington State, Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma or in the Fiesta Bowl.

1994 (Sophomore)

Playing in 10 games, Townsend recorded six tackles while serving as a backup at defensive tackle to Christian Peter and Scott Saltsman. He recorded a career-high three stops, all assisted, against Pacific, and had his lone tackle for loss, three yards, in the season opener against West Virginia. Townsend also had two quarterback hurries on the year. In the 1995 Orange Bowl against Miami, Townsend had one assisted tackle.

1993 (Freshman)

Townsend played in two games in 1993 (against North Texas and Colorado State), and recorded two tackles (one solo), including an eight-yard sack against Colorado State. He also had one quarterback hurry against the CSU Rams. He played in the 1994 Federal Express Orange Bowl but did not have any tackles.

1992 (Redshirt)

A scholarship athlete, Townsend redshirted in 1992.

Before Nebraska (Yerba Buena High School)

After starting on both the offensive and defensive lines for Coach Brook Vasconcellos at San Jose Yerba Buena High School, Townsend was an all-county pick as a senior. He had 165 tackles and 18 sacks the last two seasons, including 85 stops and 10 sacks in 1991. SuperPrep Magazine named him the defensive player-of-the-year on the West Coast, while the Long Beach Press-Telegram listed him as one of the Best in the West and noted that he was one of only three players to get votes from all 10 college recruiters on the selection panel.
