2021-22 (Senior)
Maggie Berning closed her last conference meet with a career-best 200 butterfly time (1:57.32) in the B-finals that put her at third on Nebraska's all-time list. 

Her senior season started at the Iowa dual, where she swam to fourth in the 500 freestyle. The senior from Kettering, Ohio produced a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:00.24) and a 16th-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:58.20) at the competitive Mizzou Invitational. Berning wrapped up the dual season with a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 butterfly and a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 500 free.

2020-21 (Junior)
Berning produced a solid junior season in the pool for the Big Red by scoring in both the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle at the 2021 Big Ten Swimming Championships in Minneapolis. Berning earned a spot in the B-Final of the 200 fly by posting a career-best time of 1:59.56 in the prelims. She scored 12 team points for the Huskers with her 15th-place finish in the event (1:59.82). Berning also advanced to the C-Final in the 500 free and posted a career-best 4:50.52 to take 21st in the final to earn four more points for the Huskers.

Berning produced a trio of top-five individual finishes during the abbreviated 2021 regular season, highlighted by her runner-up showing in the 200 fly in a home dual with Illinois (Jan. 23). She opened the year with a third-place finish in the 200 fly at Iowa (Jan. 16), before adding a fourth-place finish in a tri-dual with Minnesota and Iowa (Feb. 6).  

2019-20 (Sophomore)
Berning was a valuable contributor in a talented, deep and hard-working group of distance freestylers as a sophomore in 2019-20. Berning slashed her times throughout the season, including a then-career-best 4:54.58 to finish 46th in the 500-yard free at the Big Ten Championships. She added a 28th-place showing in the 1,650 free (16:56.78) at the conference meet. Berning raced to a career-best 10:11.89 at the Mizzou Invitational before closing the season with a then-career-best 1:59.75 in the 200-yard butterfly at the Last Chance meet in Columbia, Mo. Throughout the season, Berning produced 12 top-five finishes, including the first two victories of her career. In the classroom, she captured Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2020.

2018-19 (Freshman)
Berning made a splash in her debut season, earning six top-five finishes that included three second-place showings. She added four career bests, with two coming at the Hawkeye Invitational and two at the Big Ten Championships in the 500 free (5:00.07), the 1,650 free (16:53.95), the 100 fly (56.99) and the 200 fly (1:59.83). At the Big Ten Championships, she helped the Huskers compete in the 200 fly (22nd), 1,650 free (36th) and 500 free (59th). Berning earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2019. She was also selected to the 2019 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Previous
Berning joined the Huskers after setting a pair of Fairmont High School records. She was a three-time winner of Fairmont’s most valuable swimmer award and a four-time letterwinner. Berning was a three-time winner of the South West Classic in the 200 butterfly and the meet record holder. The four-time Ohio state qualifier was also a two-time TYR Pro finals qualifier. She was an All-Ohio selection in the 100 fly, 200 free and 500 free. Berning earned a Fairmont Scholar-Athlete award and was named to the Fairmont Honor Roll. Berning was also a team record holder in the 200 fly, 1,500 free and 1,650 free for the Dayton Raiders. She was a club teammate of 2020-21 Husker senior Mira Rhodes with the Dayton Raiders.

Personal 
The daughter of Krista and Mike Berning, Maggie was born Oct. 27, 1999 in Kettering, Ohio. Maggie has a brother, Kristian. Maggie earned her bachelor's degree from Nebraska in December of 2022, as a textiles, merchandise and fashion design major. She claimed Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2020, 2021 and 2022. She was a six-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll pick and a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
