Nebraska Edged Out By Northwestern Sunday

The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell in a back-and-forth dual against the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday. The Huskers fall to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten after their weekend in Lincoln. 

NU dropped two doubles matches and three singles matches, while picking up three singles victories on the day. 

Sunday’s dual began with doubles at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. Katie Spencer and Catherine Gagnon teamed up on court one, with Emma Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini pairing up on court two, and Reya Lee Coe and Yuzu Miyoshi on court three. Court one was the first to finish, as nationally-ranked No. 87 Phanthala/Jessel downed Spencer/Gagnon, 6-3. Loureiro/Raath then defeated Coe/Miyoshi by a score of 7-5, securing the doubles point for Northwestern. Rizzetto/Rossini were left unfinished against No. 77 Dagan Fruchtman/Feldman on court two. 

With the Wildcats up one, the Big Red headed into singles play. Northwestern began singles by extending its lead 2-0 after Autumn Rabjohn’s straight-set victory over Rizzetto on court three. Spencer followed with a straight-set win of her own, defeating Raath on court four by a score of 6-1, 6-3. In her spring singles debut for the Huskers, Conley Raidt took down Feldman 6-3, 6-4 on court two to even the score at 2-2. 

On court one, Maria Taranova pushed Nebraska’s score to 3-2, taking down nationally-ranked No. 69 Margot Phanthala, 6-4, 7-5, earning the first ranked victory for a Husker this season. Shortly after, Gagnon fell to Jessel on court six, 7-6 [7-5], 7-6 [7-3], evening the score out once again at 3-3. Ultimately, Nebraska fell just short of victory, as Dagan Fruchtman defeated Rossini on court five, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The Big Red will spend the weekend in Michigan for a pair of matches against Michigan and Michigan State. NU will face the Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m. (CT), and the Spartans in East Lansing on Sunday, March 15 at 11 a.m. (CT).
