Huskers Complete Day Two of ITA Regionals

Five Huskers found the win column on day two of ITA Regionals held in Lincoln at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. With doubles play starting and the main draw of singles, day two was a packed day for the Big Red as seven Huskers competed. 

In doubles play, junior Jan Sebesta and freshman Enzo Champignuelle paired up but fell short to Arkansas’s Ben Weintraub and Timothee Andriveau, 5-8. Senior Henry Lamchinniah and sophomore Jeri Lassila battled vs. Jack Berry and Scott Houben of Oral Roberts getting an 8-5 win with Nebraska winning their doubles match and taking the second Husker win of the tournament. Juniors Aniss Rafiq/Calin Stirbu dropped their doubles match to Pavan Uppu/Maddox Lundell (UNO), 8-7.

In singles play, Lassila opened up with a win of his own in the main draw taking his match in two sets vs. Ilan Hediger (OSU), 6-0, 7-6. Shortly after, Rafiq took a respectable win of his own defeating Alan Gonzalez (DU), 6-3, 6-1. Lamchinniah improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a singles win of his own over Pavan Uppu (UNO), 6-3, 6-0. Sebesta fell to Asahi Harazaki (OU), in two, 6-1, 6-2. After a qualifying win yesterday, Ward found another win in the main draw, in a three-set battle vs. Ben Stecker (OSU), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Rounding out the day for NU was Stirbu, after battling in the first set winning it 7-6, Stirbu opened up the match taking the second set 6-1 equaling the sixth Husker win on the day. 

The Huskers will continue play at 9 am, tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 8. Play will start with the round of 32 singles and continue into the round of 16 doubles.
