Struthers, Ohio - The fifth-ranked Nebraska Bowling team ended day one of the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic in first place with a total pinfall of 5,514, an average of 220.6 and a 5-0 record.
The Huskers began the day facing off against No. 25 University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. Desiree Buchert, Karina Capron, Brenna Hartzler, Kayla Starr and Haley Swindle started the day for the Big Red. NU took game one 229-218 with a strong back five frames. Open frames from UMES in game two allowed the Huskers to capitalize and win another game 192-169. They kept the pressure on in game three, opening the game with a turkey and striking six total frames to win in dominant fashion, 224-176. The Huskers opened game four with as many strikes and closed out a nine-strike, 235-155 score line with a full tenth frame courtesy of Swindle. The fifth game was a step back but still a solid performance as the Big Red overcame open frames to win 193-192, taking the match 1,073-910.
The second match of the day pitted NU against No. 21 Valparaiso. Starr and Capron swapped spots in the lineup and the Huskers came out swinging to take game one 221-185. The Beacons answered back with a resounding nine-bagger starting in the second frame to win game two 265-230 despite a clean game from NU. With the match total at 451-450 in favor of Nebraska after two games, the Huskers increased their lead with another clean game, this time winning game three 247-166. Game four was a similar story as the Big Red continued dominating, winning 237-172 and all but securing their second match victory of the tournament. Game five was the closest of the contest, but the Huskers emerged victorious 201-190, taking the match 1,136-978.
Match three's opponent was No. 4 Arkansas State, who last played Nebraska in the 2026 NCAA Pittsburgh Regional, ending NU's season there. Retaining the same lineup from the previous game, the Huskers were eager to avenge their last meeting with the Red Wolves. They took game one 215-214 off of Swindle's three strikes in the tenth frame, and followed it up with a nine-strike game two to win 229-205. Game three was ugly for both squads, but the Huskers pulled through to win 185-182. They followed up with another victory in game four, winning 214-175, extending their match lead to 843-776 heading into game five. The Big Red left nothing to chance in the final game, tossing a dominant eight-strike game to win 267-213 and claim the match 1,110-989. The win moved Nebraska to 3-0 on the day and in first place heading into the fourth match.
The Huskers' fourth match was against No. 18 Mount St. Mary's. The Big Red made no lineup changes at the start of the match and battled out a close one with The Mount, losing game one 228-224. The Huskers bounced back in a big way in game two, throwing seven strikes to tally a 234-213 win to take the match lead. This was followed up by a 224-203 win and a 218-198 victory after that, giving Nebraska a 900-842 lead to begin game five. Open frames crippled the Huskers in that game as they lost 213-170, but their cushion was large enough to win the match 1,070-1,055, moving to 4-0.
The final opponent of the day for NU was No. 9 North Carolina A&T. The Huskers jumped out in front quickly, winning game one 248-181. Open frames in game two slowed the Big Red's momentum, losing 205-188 but still keeping a 50-pin lead over the Aggies. Game three saw NCA&T toss a strong 278-203 victory, stealing the lead from NU heading into game four. Huskers answered with force, tossing ten strikes including a six-bagger to secure a 257-156 victory, taking the lead right back with a match total of 896-820. Nebraska continued its consistent play into game five, opening with a four-bagger to win 229-185 and clinch their fifth match of the day 1,125-1,005.
The Huskers ended the day in first with a total pinfall of 5,514 and an average of 220.6, over 200 pins in front of No. 2 Vanderbilt in second with 5,291. They were the only team to end every match with more than 1,000 pins.
Play resumes tomorrow, Oct. 17 at 8:25 a.m. CT with the first of five traditional matches, with the leader in total pinfall granted the No. 1 seed in Sunday's ladder bracket.
