Former Nebraska women’s basketball player and assistant coach Amy Stephens was added to the Husker flag football staff as the director of operations, the team announced Tuesday.
“As the new director of operations for flag football at Nebraska, I am thrilled to be part of building a championship culture, empowering our student-athletes and growing the game of flag football in Husker Nation,” Stephens said.
Stephens played for Nebraska from 1985-89 and has assistant coaching experience at NU (1990-91, 2014-16), Iowa State (1992-94), Saint Louis (2012-13) and Memphis (2013-14). As an assistant coach for the Big Red, Stephens led a defense that ranked first in the Big Ten in scoring defense in 2014-15.
She was the head coach at Nebraska-Kearney from 1994-2002 and at Drake from 2003-12. In her 17-year career as a head coach, Stephens compiled a 348-173 record, good for a .668 winning percentage.
“We are so excited to have Amy joining our staff as we build this program from the ground up,” Head Coach Liz Sowers said. “She has valuable coaching experience and knows how a successful program runs. She is also familiar with Nebraska and its athletics culture and bleeds Husker red. She will be a great asset for us!”
Stephens ranks in the top 10 in Nebraska women’s basketball history for single-season totals in points, points per game, field goals made, three-pointers made, three-pointers attempted, three-point percentage, free throw percentage and steals. She claimed a spot on NU’s All-Century Team in 2000. Stephens helped the Huskers to a Big Eight title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1988.
