After a strong performance this past weekend, Katie Spencer has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, as the conference announced Wednesday.
Spencer is the first Husker to win a Big Ten weekly award this season, and the first since Samantha Alicea won Big Ten Player of the Week on March 1, 2023. She is also the first Nebraska player to earn Freshman of the Week Honors in the Big Ten.
Spencer helped the Huskers rise to No. 45 in the ITA rankings after earning a pair of victories this past weekend. Her successful weekend featured a top-15 ranked doubles victory with partner Conley Raidt over Ohio State’s No. 13 Oluwadare/Chavez on Friday, and a singles clinch in NU’s victory over then-No. 46 Penn State on Sunday.
Spencer’s doubles victory on Friday helped the Big Red duo rise from No. 65 to No. 36 in the national rankings. The duo improved to 4-1 on the season at the No. 1 spot.
Spencer looks to continue her impressive freshman season as the Huskers take on Creighton on April 8 at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
