Rudy Sautron, Caden Mickelson and Jackson Benge all produced top-25 finishes to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to a tie for fifth at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C., Sunday.
The Huskers put together three solid rounds to close at 838 (-2), match No. 42 UNC Wilmington. Nebraska finished just six strokes back of No. 29 Texas A&M, which took fourth at 832 (-8). The hosts from No. 11 North Carolina ran away with the team title at 808 (-32). No. 27 Duke finished second at 828 (-12), 20 strokes behind the Tar Heels.
The Big Red picked up several quality wins in the tournament, defeating No. 55 Houston (858) by 20 strokes, while adding top-100 wins over No. 71 Elon, No. 80 East Tennessee State and No. 100 Campbell.
Sautron and Mickelson led the Huskers by tying for 14th with 54-hole totals of 208 (-2) on the par-70, 7,020-yard layout of the Finley Golf Club. Sautron strung together rounds of 69, 70 and 69 to solidify his position for a potential NCAA Regional berth.
Mickelson, a freshman from Kansas City, Mo., opened with back-to-back rounds of 68 (-2), before closing with a final-round 72.
Benge, a sophomore from Omaha, continued his solid second season at Nebraska by tying for 25th at 211 (+1) with rounds of 72, 69 and 70.
Fellow sophomore Brodie Cunningham (Glasgow, Scotland) added a 213 (+3) with rounds of 71, 72 and 70 to tie for 33rd in the 87-player field.
Redshirt junior Evan McDermott rounded out the Husker lineup by tying for 58th with rounds of 70, 73 and 75 to close at 218 (+8).
North Carolina's Niall Sheils Donegan captured medalist honors with a three-round score of 198 (-12), while Tar Heel teammate Grant Roscich finished second at 200 (-10). Duke's Bryan Kim rounded out the top three at 202 (-8).
Nebraska will return to action at the 2026 Big Ten Championship in North Plains, Ore. (May 1-3).
