Written byZac Arens

The No. 54 Nebraska men’s tennis team took down No. 46 Oregon 4-3 in a windy outdoor match on Sunday, March 29 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln. The Big Red battled behind four singles wins and a clutch win by freshman Niels Van Der Sijs to overcome a 3-0 deficit and take down the Ducks.

In doubles play, the Huskers battled against the Ducks on all three courts losing by a margin of three games total. At No. 3 doubles, Joan Torres Espinosa/Jeri Lassila (NEB) fell to Lachlan Robertson/Cameron Burton (ORE), 4-6. Henry Lamchinniah/Matt Shearer (NEB) fought to force a tiebreaker in their match vs. #34 Matthew Burton/Pierre Mouesca (ORE) but ultimately dropped the seventh game and match to the Ducks, 6-7 clinching the doubles point for Oregon as Nebraska trailed 0-1 going into singles play.

The match vs. Nikolay Syosoev/Henry Bilicic (NEB) and Vlad Breazu/Declan Galligan (ORE) was abandoned at 6-5.

In singles, Oregon and Nebraska split the first sets both taking three each. As the Huskers battled to earn singles wins, Lassila fell on the losing side of his match vs. Mouesca, 4-6, 0-6. Almost immediately after, the Ducks took another singles win as #81 Sysoev dropped his match to #115 Breazu in straight sets, 3-6, 2-6 as Oregon got out to a 3-0 lead in the match. The Huskers came firing back as Lamchinniah answered the call at No. 6 to win his match in two sets vs. Russell Soohoo, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3, Wells held on his second set of his match to win in straight sets vs. Sam Olszakowski, 6-2, 7-5.

The match sat at No. 4 and 5 singles with both matches being in third sets. Espinosa was the first to get the job done, sweeping his third set and winning vs. Robertson, 6-1, 6-7 [5-7], 6-0.

Once again the match at stake was with Van Der Sijs as he battled in the third set at No. 4 singles. After going back-and-forth vs. Matthew Burton, Van Der Sijs won three unanswered games in his third set to clinch his match (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) and come up on the winning side to help the Huskers to a 4-3 win over the Ducks.
