Huskers Defeat #64 Oregon in Comeback Victory

The Nebraska women’s tennis team defeated No. 64 Oregon, 4-3 in a Sunday afternoon match at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. NU finishes off an undefeated weekend featuring two ranked upsets.

The Huskers dropped two doubles matches and three singles matches, accompanied by a doubles victory and four singles victories.

The dual against the Ducks began with doubles in Lincoln. Doubles play started off hot with Reya Lee Coe and Natalia Trigosso grabbing a quick 6-2 victory over Daughters/Mihulka on court three. Shortly after, Conley Raidt and Katie Spencer fell to Jagare/Symons by a score of 6-3 on court one. On court two, Catherine Gagnon and Yuzu Miyoshi fought back after falling down 4-1, but ultimately fell to Furutani/Santitto, 7-6 [7-5], giving Oregon the doubles point. 

After falling down a point, the Big Red headed into singles play. The Ducks extended the lead with Jagare’s straight-set victory over Maria Taranova on court one, but Spencer followed quickly behind with a win on court three over Virginia Crocker by a score of 6-2, 7-5. Raidt fell to Symons on court two, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, which gave Oregon a 3-1 lead.

The Huskers fought and pushed back against the deficit, as Tiziana Rossini took down Furutani in straight sets on court five, followed by Miyoshi clinching a win on court six by a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, to tie the match up at 3-3. With the final point and another ranked victory on the line, Catherine Gagnon defeated Daughters on court four, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, to secure the 4-3 victory for the Big Red.

The Huskers will spend a weekend in Indiana for a pair of matches against Purdue and Indiana. Nebraska will face off against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette at 3 p.m. (CT) on Friday, March 27, and the Hoosiers in Bloomington at noon (CT).
