Halfway through the 2026 NCAA Championships, the Nebraska swimming and diving team featured three athletes in the preliminary rounds on Thursday morning.
Action was kicked off with Beatrix Tanko swimming her inaugural swim in the 100 fly. The junior from Budapest, Hungary, swam a 51.75 in the event at the Big Ten Championships. The nationals qualifying time is not only her career best, but also a school record for the Big Red.
Marking her second-best performance of the season, Tanko swam a 51.94 for third in her heat and 32nd overall in the event’s prelims.
Immediately following was three-time All-American Gena Jorgenson in the 400 IM. After securing her third straight All-America fourth-place swim in the 1,650 free on Wednesday evening, Jorgenson went on to swim a 4:08.70 during the morning prelims.
The senior from Aberdeen, S.D. broke her own record set at the 2024 NCAA Championships of 4:11.51 at the conference championships. Her time of 4:07.84 was enough for sixth place on the podium.
From her 31st seeding, Jorgenson climbed to 22nd place at this year’s championship. Cutting 5.06 seconds from her 39th-place finish a year ago, she marked historic improvements over the season in the event.
After six dives in the preliminary round, Abby Baxter earned a score of 263.75 on the one-meter board. The junior from Coppell, Texas, reached an 18th-place finish to conclude her first performance on the one-meter at nationals in her career.
Action for the Huskers will resume on Friday morning, where Baxter, Jorgenson and Tanko will look to continue their momentum for the remainder of the competition. Baxter will compete on the three-meter board, Jorgenson in the 500 free and Tanko in the 50 free on Friday.
Streaming on ESPN+, prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT, with diving trials starting at 11:15 a.m. CT. Finals will resume later at 5 p.m. and can be followed along with on MeetMobile.
