The Nebraska women’s tennis team is back at home this weekend for a pair of matches against No. 21 Washington on Friday, March 20, and No. 64 Oregon on Sunday, March 22. The Huskers are set to face the Huskies at 5 p.m. (CT), and the Ducks at noon (CT), at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Nebraska (8-5, 1-3 Big Ten) split its matches last weekend, falling at No. 40 Michigan and then defeating Michigan State in East Lansing.
Junior Maria Taranova has captured an impressive start to Big Ten play, totaling two ranked victories so far this season with wins against Northwestern’s No. 69-ranked Margot Phanthala on March 8, and No. 109 Ellie Blackford last weekend against Michigan State. Her Sunday victory put her at six singles wins this season, tying her with freshman Katie Spencer who has captured an impressive debut for the Big Red so far this season.
Washington (12-0, 3-0 Big Ten)
History: The series between the Big Red and the Huskies is split at 1-1. Last time out, the Huskers fell to Washington 3-4 in Seattle, Wash. The Huskies have three ranked singles players, with their highest ranked athlete being No. 64 Reece Carter. Erika Matsuda is ranked No. 70 nationally, and Anna-Marie Weissheim rounds out Washington’s singles rankings at No. 103. Matsuda and teammate Carina Syrtveit are also paired up as the 46th-ranked doubles squad in the country.
Oregon (10-5, 1-2 Big Ten)
History: The Huskers are split as well with Oregon all-time at 2-2. Nebraska was last topped by the Ducks, 4-2 at Oregon. The Ducks have grabbed notable wins over No. 61 Washington State, No. 64 Rutgers and No. 61 Denver. Oregon will face off against No. 41 Iowa before heading to Lincoln for Sunday’s match.
