Nebraska men’s tennis defeated Texas Tech, 4-3, on Friday, Jan. 30 at the Mcleod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. With the win, NU improved to 5-0 this spring.
In doubles play, the Huskers battled it out to take the doubles point from the Red Raiders (1-2). Leo Linquet/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) defeated Sebastian Abboud/Thomas VanDen Dooren (TTU), 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Matt Shearer/Nikolay Sysoev (NEB) fell to Thiago Guglieri/Niksa Arsic (TTU), 4-6 to even the doubles matches.
At No. 3 doubles, Jeri Lassila/Colson Wells (NEB) battled it out to take the match vs. Felipe Pagnacco/Ludovico Vaccari (TTU), 6-4 and secure the doubles point for the Huskers. Nebraska led 1-0 going into singles play.
In singles play, Nebraska continued to fight going back-and-forth. Sysoev dropped his match on court one 3-6, 2-6 to Arsic to tie the overall match up 1-1.
Immediately after the conclusion of that match Wells answered right back taking his match 6-3, 6-2 in Nebraska’s favor vs. VanDen Dooren. But Texas Tech would have an answer winning back-to-back matches on court five and six. On court five, Niels Van der Sijs dropped his match 6-7 [5-7], 2-6 against Abboud. Espinosa dropped his match on court six vs. Guglieri, 6-4, 6-7 [5-7] to give Texas Tech the 3-2 lead.
Linquet and Lassila stood alone on court two and three, seeing who would take the overall match with Texas Tech up 3-2 on Nebraska. Lassila was the first to finish his match beating Pagnacco in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to continue his undefeated spring season streak and bring the Huskers back tied with the Red Raiders, 3-3.
The spotlight stuck with Linquet as he was the last match left on court two. Once again the senior came up clutch, winning his match 6-2, 6-7 [5-7], 7-5 against Vaccari and walking it off for Nebraska as the Huskers defeated Texas Tech on the road, 4-3.
