New Castle, Del. - The Nebraska Bowling team went 4-1 on the second day of competition at the Northeast Classic, moving their tournament record to 6-4. They finished the day in ninth place with a pinfall and average of 9,890 and 197.8.
In their first of five traditional matches, the Huskers faced off against the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore Hawks. Starting for the Scarlet and Cream was Desiree Buchert, Lani Breedlove, Kayla Starr, Karina Capron and Jillian Martin. The Huskers would struggle with open frames off splits initially, keeping the score close, but Starr provided stability to allow her teammates to find their rhythm, as she notched a four-bagger to start the game. The Hawks had open frame issues of their own, allowing the Big Red some margin for error while keeping the lead. Capron tacked on four-straight of her own, and going into the seventh frame, it was a comfortable – but by no means safe – lead for Nebraska, on top 536-492. More splits and open frames would be the Huskers’ undoing, with multiple strings of UMES strikes allowing the Hawks to get back into the game and claim the lead. It came down to the wire, with Martin having a chance to take the lead if she was able to strike three in the tenth, but another unlucky split would kill the Big Red’s chances of making a comeback. UMES claimed victory, 935-923, and handed NU its fourth loss of the tournament.
With the Huskers looking to get back in the win column, the second match’s opponent was the William Smith University Herons. Electing to substitute Haley Swindle in for Buchert, the Big Red had a solid start, but open frames again posed a problem. Breedlove contributed a triple early, but William Smith’s consistent play would keep things close; the Huskers going into the back five with only a one-pin lead at 417-416. NU had more issues with splits initially in the last five frames, allowing William Smith to capitalize and take the lead. But a triple from Starr and three-straight open frames in the eighth from Herons allowed the Huskers to come back, still trailing, but with a win not out of the question. A clutch double from Martin had the Scarlet and Cream with a 761-759 lead going into the final frame. It would come down to the very last frame as Martin delivered a strike and spare to nudge the Huskers past the Herons, 901-894, bringing their tournament record to 3-4.
Now having a win on the day, the Big Red would face off next against the Dominican University Chargers, hoping to turn that win into a win streak. After an uncertain start, the Huskers turned it into just that. Every player would string together multiple strikes at one point or another, led by Capron (248) and Swindle (245) en route to a dominant 1138-877 Huskers win, returning NU’s record back to .500 at 4-4 in the tournament with two matches left to play.
Now with momentum, the Big Red would play their fourth match of the day was against the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks. Nebraska gained control early, but splits and missed spares kept the Redhawks in it. Triples from Starr and Breedlove kept the Huskers ahead, with the rest of the lineup eventually finding their stride and putting the Scarlet and Cream up big. They would keep rolling all the way to their fifth win of the tournament, 1029-873 led by Capron who knocked down 228 pins.
The final traditional match was against the twentieth-ranked Bryant Bulldogs. The Huskers continued their win streak here, dominating the Bulldogs 1043-1001 in a match that only appeared close in the tenth frame. The Big Red were spearheaded by a five-bagger to start the game courtesy of Capron, and they didn’t look back after, securing their sixth win of the tournament.
The Huskers clawed their way back into single-digit placing, having been as low as fifteenth in the standings before their win streak to get back on track. The two standouts for the Huskers, Capron (1,082) and Martin (1,072), would finish the day in eleventh and thirteenth place while posting averages of 216.40, and 214.60, respectively. Finishing day two in ninth place, the Scarlet and Cream will have a chance to play for a place as high as sixth tomorrow when they return to the lanes at 7:25 a.m. CT.
