Nebraska men’s tennis started the spring season 2-0 vs. Omaha in a Saturday doubleheader at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The Big Red kept the Mavericks scoreless on the day taking a combined 16 matches.
In morning action, Nebraska secured the early lead taking the doubles point with a pair of wins. The duo of freshman Jeri Lassila and senior Nikolay Sysoev captured a 6-3 win against Omaha’s Liam Spiers and Christian Trevey on court three. Junior Henry Lamchinniah and senior Leo Linquet secured a 6-4 win against Ethan Gaubert and Kristian Thomas on court one to give Nebraska the doubles point. Senior Matt Shearer and redshirt sophomore Colson Wells dropped their match to Byran Kuntz and Pavan Uppu on court two.
With the 1-0 lead, singles action began with a win from Lamchinniah who rolled through his first win as a Husker vs. Taylor (6-3, 6-1). Linquet followed him with a win against Kuntz on court one (6-3, 6-3). Lassila dominated in his spring debut against Pavan Uppu (6-4, 6-2).
Wells continued the singles win streak for the Huskers, where he sealed his match against Trevey (6-3, 6-4) and clinched the match for Nebraska.
Extending the lead for Nebraska was Sysoev who battled on court one losing the first set, 2-6. In set two, he battled back to win the set 6-4 and take the third 1-0 [10-7] vs. Spiers.
Joan Torres Espinosa finished the clean sweep for the Huskers taking his match (4-6, 6-2, 1-0 [10-7]) against Maddox Lundell. The Huskers secured their first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep over the Mavs.
In the evening action, Nebraska continued the winning day taking the doubles point once again. The duo of Lamchinniah and Linquet dominated on court two taking the match, 6-1 against Omaha’s Gaubert and Uppu. Following them was Lassila and Sysoev winning against Scheglowski and Spiers, 6-2 on court three to secure the doubles point for the Huskers.
With the Big Red leading going into singles, Linquet locked down the first point for singles play winning his match (6-1, 6-1) against Spiers.
Both Nebraska freshmen answered the early season call, securing the Huskers second win of the day with Niels van der Sijs capturing his first spring collegiate match win vs. Caleb Peterson in dominating fashion (6-2, 6-3) and Lassila going 2-0 on the day catching his second win in a match vs. Uppu (6-3, 6-1).
Lamchinniah strolled his match on court five winning (6-2, 6-3) vs. Thomas. To finish the day, Sysoev battled in a tiebreaker set vs. Kunz on court one. Sysoev went out in front, winning the first set 7-5 with Kunz coming right back to tie the second set 6-6. In a tiebreaker to 10 having to win by two, the both guys went back-and-forth as Sysoev pulled away at the ninth point to win the match 7-5, 7-6 [11-9].
The Huskers complete the day sweep winning both matches of the doubleheader 7-0.
