No. 13 Huskers Look to Cap Perfect Non-Con Slate with New Hampshire

The No. 13 Nebraska men's basketball team closes non-conference action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, as the Huskers host New Hampshire at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff is set for shortly after 8 p.m. (central) and the game will be carried on BTN and broadcast on the Huskers Radio Network, as well as on Huskers.com and on the official Huskers app. The game will also be available on the Fox Sports and Fox One app.  A limited number of 300 Level tickets are available for the matchup by visiting Huskers.com/Tickets or at the PBA Box Office beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Huskers have been off since a 78-55 win over North Dakota on Dec. 21. Nebraska trailed 26-24 at the half but rebounded by shooting 63 percent in the second half to outscore the Fighting Hawks, 54-29, after halftime. Berke Büyüktuncel led Nebraska with his first career triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists, as he became the second Husker this season to post a triple double. Büyüktuncel is enjoying a solid junior campaign, as he is posting career highs in scoring (8.0 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg) and assists (2.0 apg) while helping Nebraska's defense rank in the top 30 nationally in defensive rating.

While Büyüktuncel’s triple-double was the big headline, the Huskers put four players in double figures led by Braden Frager's 17-point effort. Frager, who earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, is one of the Big Ten's top bench scorers, averaging 11.3 ppg on 52 percent shooting on the season.

The Huskers, whose 12-0 start is the best in program history, come into the contest averaging 83.3 ppg which is the program's highest scoring average after 12 games since the 1995-96 season.  The Huskers have also been solid defensively, ranking 16th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.380).

New Hampshire (4-8) has been off since a 93-79 loss at Saint Louis on Dec. 21. Jack Graham had a team-high 18 points as the Wildcats trailed 85-79 with 1:28 left before Saint Louis used an 8-0 run to earn the win.

Numbers to Know
5 - Braden Frager became the fifth Husker since 1996-07 to earn multiple conference rookie/freshman of the week, joining Bryce McGowens (2021-22), Shavon Shields (2012-13), Toney McCray (2008-09) and Joe McCray (2004-05).

33- Fred Hoiberg has 33 wins over ranked opponents, including 11 career wins against top-10 teams,  in his collegiate coaching career. In addition, his six road wins against ranked opponents is second only to Danny Nee (seven) all-time among NU men's basketball coaches.

.963 - Nebraska is 26-1 at home in non-conference play over the last three-plus seasons and is 39-9 (.813) at home in non-conference action in Fred Hoiberg's seven seasons at Nebraska.

80+ - Nebraska is 46-10 (.821) under Fred Hoiberg when scoring 80 or more points, including a 37-7 mark over the last three-plus seasons. Of those seven losses since the start of 2022-23, four came in overtime.

54.0 - Nebraska's top four scorers (Rienk Mast, Pryce Sandfort, Braden Frager and Jamarques Lawrence) are combining for 54.9 points per game. None of them were in the Husker lineup last season.

6.0 - Sam Hoiberg is second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (min. 3 assists per game) at 6.0-to-1 as of Dec. 27. Over the last four games, Hoiberg has 17 assists and just one turnover in 118:31 of game action.

Huskers Continue to Climb in Polls
Nebraska remained in the poll for the third straight week, moving to No. 13 in the Dec. 22 poll. The No. 13 ranking is NU's highest since March 11, 1991, when the Huskers were No. 11 in the final regular-season AP poll.

• The Huskers are now 41-22 (.651) all-time when ranked in the AP poll following the win over North Dakota.

• Nebraska's win over Illinois on Dec. 23 marked the first time since 1991 that Nebraska won a ranked vs. ranked matchup.

• The Huskers Jan. 3 game against No. 9 Michigan State will be the first time Nebraska has hosted a top-15 matchup since March 3, 1991, when No. 15 Nebraska hosted No. 10 Kansas. That is the only time in school history that Nebraska hosted a ranked vs. ranked matchup.

Unbeaten x2
The Husker men and women enter the final week of 2025 with identical 12-0 records, marking the first time in school history they have accomplished the feat.  As of Dec. 27, only three schools - Iowa State, Nebraska and Vanderbilt - have both their men's and women's teams unbeaten. The Husker women, ranked No. 20 in the AP poll on Dec. 22, will host No. 17 USC on Dec. 29.   According to BTN research, Tennessee (2024-25) is the only other program over the last five years to have their men's and women's team start 12-0 besides the three schools in 2025-26.

Worth Noting
• Nebraska will be looking to complete its non-conference slated with a perfect 12-0 record. It would mark the first time since the 1928-29 season where NU posted an unblemished non-conference mark (6-0). The Huskers are 33-2 in regular-season non-conference play since the start of the 2023-24 season (11-1 in 2023-24; 11-1 in 2024-25).

• Nebraska enters the week as one of six unbeaten teams in Division I, joining Michigan, Arizona, Iowa State, Vanderbilt and Miami (Ohio).

• Nebraska enters the week ranked No. 11 in the NET on Dec. 27. NU is one of six Big Ten teams in the top 13 of the NET (No. 1 Michigan, No. 7 Purdue, No. 10 Illinois, No. 11 Nebraska, No. 12 Iowa and No. 13 Michigan State). The Big Ten has more teams in both the top 25 and top 50 of the NET than any other conference.

• Nebraska comes into the New Hampshire matchup with 16 straight wins, breaking the school record for consecutive wins. The 16 straight wins broke the mark of 14 originally set between 1912 and 1913 and during the 1990-91 season. It is the longest active streak in the nation. Before the current win streak, NU's longest streak under Fred Hoiberg was a seven-game streak to start the 2023-24 season.   Nebraska is averaging 82.7 ppg on 48.2 percent shooting during its 16-game win streak and has scored at least 1.00 point per possession in all 16 contests.

• With the 83-80 win at No. 13 Illinois on Dec. 13, the Huskers are now 10-11 in the last 21 games against ranked teams, including a 6-6 mark in true road games. Prior to that, NU had lost 24 straight against ranked teams dating back to the 2019 Big Ten Tournament.

• The Huskers are third in the Big Ten and 31st nationally with 10.8 3-pointers made per game as of Dec. 27. Nebraska's 11.2 3-pointers per game are 3.9 more 3-pointers per game than last season after 12 games and marks is the best early-season start for a Fred Hoiberg team at NU.

• Nebraska has made 10-or-more 3-pointers eight times in 12 games, including 17 against FIU and 15 vs. Oklahoma.  It marked only the seventh and eighth time in school history that NU had at least 15 3-pointers in a game. Last year, the Huskers hit 10-or-more 3-pointers just seven times in 35 contests.

• Nebraska comes into the New Hampshire game averaging 83.3 ppg, which is the Huskers' highest scoring average after 12 games since the 1995-96 season (89.9 ppg). The 1995-96 team marked the last time Nebraska averaged 80.0 ppg in a season.  Nebraska's 48.2 percent shooting as a team is on pace to be the Huskers' highest field goal percentage since 2000-01 (.487).

• NU's team 2.01-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally as of Dec. 27. NU is one of three Big Ten teams in the top six nationally in that category (Purdue, 4th; Northwestern 6th). It is on track to shatter the school mark of 1.81 set in 1984-85. NU's best assist-to-turnover ratio under Hoiberg is 1.38-to-1 in 2023-24.

• Nebraska had 22 assists and just six turnovers in the win over North Dakota, the fourth time this year that the Huskers have had at least 20 assists and six or fewer turnovers (Winthrop, at Oklahoma, at Illinois).

• Nebraska enters Tuesday's game with New Hampshire ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 18th nationally with 19.1 assists per game. It is an increase of 4.9 assists per game from last season. NU has averaged 20 assists only two times in school history (1990-91 and 1984-85), and Nebraska's highest assist per game total under Hoiberg is 15.3 per game in 2023-24.

•Nine Huskers have posted double-figure efforts this season, while four players have had at least one 20-point performance (Pryce Sandfort-5; Rienk Mast-4; Braden Frager-2; Jamarques Lawrence-1).

• The Huskers posted their second double-digit comeback of the season against USC Upstate on Nov. 29, overcoming a 12-point first-half deficit. During its 16-game win streak, NU now has four comebacks from 10+ points (Arizona State, UCF, Oklahoma and USC Upstate). NU also trailed by nine in the first half in the win over North Dakota.

• Over the last three-plus seasons, NU is 47-3 (.940) when holding foes to under 1.00 PPP and 48-5 when holding opponents to under 70 points. Nebraska has improved its KenPom defensive efficiency in each of the past three seasons and is on track to continue that trend early in 2025-26.

• Nebraska has held eight of its 12 opponents to under 1.0 points per possession, including four of the last five opponents.

• Nebraska has won a school-record 21 straight non-conference games dating back to Nov. 22, 2024. It is also the nation's longest non-conference win streak. NU has also won 15 straight home games against non-conference foes dating back to the 2023-24 season.

Rienk Mast is one of 11 players nationally - and five from power conference teams - averaging at least 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game as of Dec. 27.  He comes into the New Hampshire game averaging a career-high 17.0 points per game on 53 percent shooting, including 40 percent from 3-point range.

• Mast (1,600 points, 978 rebounds) is one of two active Division I players with at least 1,500 points and 900 rebounds as of Dec. 18, joining Gonzaga's Graham Ike (2,163 points, 995 rebounds). Mast also ranks in the top 15 among active NCAA players in points, rebounds and games played.

Pryce Sandfort has been one of the Big Ten's top transfers, as he enters the New Hampshire game averaging 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Sandfort has a team-high five 20-point games, including a career-high 32 points at No. 13 Illinois on Dec. 13.

• Sandfort is making a similar leap that his brother Payton made between his second and third collegiate seasons. The elder Sandfort saw his scoring average jump from 10.3 to 16.4 while also averaging more than two more rebounds per game as a junior.

• Nebraska is 46-14 (.767) over the past three-plus seasons when Sam Hoiberg plays at least 20 minutes. The senior is setting career bests in nearly every category, including scoring (8.7 ppg), rebounding (4.5 rpg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.7 spg). Over the last four games dating back to Dec. 7, he is averaging 12.4 ppg on 49 percent shooting along with 4.3 assists per game, while posting a 17-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Braden Frager has emerged as one of the top freshmen in the Big Ten as he comes into Tuesday's game with New Hampshire averaging 11.3 points per game. He earned his second Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week Award on Dec. 22 following his 17-point, four-rebound performance against North Dakota.  He is sixth among Big Ten freshmen in scoring despite starting just one of NU's first 12 contests. He was named MVP of the Hall of Fame Classic and Big Ten Freshman of the Week last month after averaging 18.0 points on 72 percent shooting and 7.0 rebounds per game in wins over K-State and New Mexico. In the Big Ten era, only one Husker freshman finished the season averaging double figures - Bryce McGowens in 2021-22 (16.8 ppg), while only seven Husker freshman have finished the year averaging double figures.

• After going 24 seasons without an in-season tournament championship, Nebraska has won two since last Christmas, taking home the Diamond Head Invitational last December and the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City last month. NU's Hall of Fame Classic title marked the first time a Big Ten team won the event since 2014.

• As of Dec. 27, there have been 14 triple-doubles in Division I basketball this season while Nebraska is the only school with multiple players recording a triple double. Over the last seven seasons, only five schools - Nebraska (2025-26), Iowa State (2023-24), Western Kentucky (2021-22), Portland (2021-22) and Utah (2019-20) - have had multiple players record triple-doubles in the same year.

• NU has 14 double-digit scoring runs this season, which is tied for 16th nationally according to EvanMiya.com.

Sam Hoiberg became Nebraska's most recent graduate, as he received his degree in media and sports communications on Dec. 20. Hoiberg joins Rienk Mast, Cale Jacobsen and Jared Garcia as graduates on the 2025-26 Husker roster.

Buyuktuncel finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists, capping the performance with a 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining before leaving to a standing ovation from the 14,519 fans in attendance. It marked the fourth triple-double in school history and second of the season, as Rienk Mast had one against FIU on Nov. 8.

• Nebraska has now won 16 straight dating back to last year, extending its own school record streak

Berke Buyuktuncel‘s triple-double tonight (12 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) was the fourth in school history and the second this season. Before tonight, Buyutuncel never had a double-double in his collegiate career.

• All four of NU’s triple-doubles have come under Fred Hoiberg – Buyuktuncel and Rienk Mast this year, Dalano Banton in 2020 and Cam Mack in 2019.

• Buyuktuncel’s 10 assists more than doubled his previous career high of four set at Ohio State last year.
