Nebraska men's golfer Rudy Sautron fired a four-under-par 140 over two rounds to finish sixth at the rain-shortened Steelwood Collegiate Sunday in Loxley, Ala.
Sautron, a junior from Reunion Island, France, opened with a 67 (-5) on the 7,096-yard layout of the Steelwood Golf Club before adding a 73 (+1) in Saturday's second round. Sunday's final round was canceled by heavy rain and lightning. Sautron finished three strokes behind tournament champion Yixiang Wang from Memphis, who closed at 137 (-7), while Luke Koenig (Rutgers) and Zachary May (Iowa State) tied for second at 138 (-6).
Sautron provided a bright spot for the Big Red, which battled to a tie for 12th in a 14-team field that featured 12 top-100 teams. The Huskers matched Virginia Tech for 12th at 586 (+10) over two rounds. No. 38 Texas A&M won the team title at 566 (-10), while Rutgers finished second at 568 (-8). No. 35 West Virginia took third at 570 (-6), while No. 67 Memphis and the hosts from No. 64 South Alabama tied for fourth at 574 (-2).
Redshirt junior Evan McDermott and sophomore Jackson Benge tied for 33rd at 146 (+2) to help the Huskers. Benge closed the second round with a 71 (-1) after opening Saturday with a 75 (+3). McDermott carded an even-par 72 in the opening round before adding a 74 (+2) in Saturday's final round.
Freshman Caden Mickelson put together rounds of 78 and 76 to finish at 154 (+1) in a tie for 71st, while sophomore Brodie Cunningham rounded out the Husker contingent in a tie for 77th at 158 after rounds of 78 and 80.
The Huskers will now take nearly four months off from competition before returning to Alabama to open the spring campaign at the Hal Williams Collegiate. The tournament, which is also hosted by South Alabama, will be held at the Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Semmes, Ala., Feb. 16-17.
