Benge Leads Huskers at Purdue

Jackson Benge fired back-to-back rounds of 71 (-1) to sit in a tie for eighth individually to lead the Nebraska men's golf team after the first 36 holes of the Purdue Fall Invitationalon Monday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Benge, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., closed the first day of the two-day event at 142 (-2) on the 7,465-yard layout of the Kampen-Cosler Golf Course. He heads to Tuesday's final round six strokes behind the tournament leader Supapon Amornchaichan from Purdue, who posted back-to-back rounds of 68 (-4) to end the day at 136 (-8).

Husker freshman Caden Mickelson, junior Rudy Sautron and sophomore Brodie Cunningham also put together top-30 performances on Monday. Mickelson moves to Tuesday's final round in a tie for 24th at 146 (+2) after rounds of 72 and 74. Sautron and Cunningham are tied for 28th at 147 (+3), while Evan McDermott added a 150 (+6) to tie for 45th in a 78-player field.

As a team, Nebraska ended the day in fifth place at 580 (+4) after rounds of 292 and even-par 288. The hosts from Purdue claimed a firm grip on the top spot at 558 (-18) with rounds of 282 (-6) and 276 (-12). Oakland and Southern Illinois sit 19 strokes back of the Boilermakers at 577 in a tie for second, just three shots ahead of Nebraska. Butler owns a two-stroke edge over the Huskers at 578.

The Purdue Fall Invitational concludes with the final 18 holes beginning on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
