Huskers Compete at Gans Creek Classic

The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo. on Friday morning. The men competed in the 8k where they took 16th with 381 points. The women competed in the 6k and also took 16th with 448 points. Four Husker women also competed in the women's 6k open race.

 

Rico Leijenaar was first across the line for the Huskers in 31st place with a time of 24:14.2. He was followed by Dennis Chapman, who came in 71st place with a time of 24:35.8. Next across the line for Nebraska was Grant Wasserman (108th, 24:51.0) and Gabe Nash (150th, 25:09.3). Rounding out the team’s top five men was Kaleb Sharp who finished 191st in 25:36.1. UCLA took the men’s 8k title with 86 points, Ohio State followed with 112 points, and Illinois-Chicago came in third with 122 points.

 

Leading the women was Ali Bainbridge in 34th place with a time of 20:07.4. She was followed by Berlyn Schutz (54th, 20:21.5) and Alea Hardie (98th, 20:50.1). Fourth in for the Huskers was Alexandra Joyce in 105th place with a time of 20:53.8. Topping off the scoring lineup for the women was Jaylee Wingate (165th, 21:29.4). Florida won the women’s 6k with 102 points, Northern Arizona followed with 126 points and Colorado took third in the team competition with 166 points. 

 

In the last race of the day four Husker women toed the line for the women’s open division 6k race. They were led by Taya Fettig who placed 11th with a time of 22:28.1. She was followed by Zoie Ecord (26th, 22:51.1), Kate Ebmeier (28th, 22:52.6), and Claire Helmers (50th, 23:23.3). The open division was won by Washburn with 81 points, followed by SE Missouri in second with 85 points, and Maryville (Mo.) took third with 120 points.

 

Up Next: The Huskers head back to Columbia, Mo. for Pre-Nationals on Sunday, Oct. 18th with events set to start at 10 a.m. (CT).
